Default green lipped mussels powder

My last budgie is in crisis and this may finally be the episode she won't recover from. I am looking for hail Maries and wonder if anyone has any information about green lipped mussels. I have it as a powder. It doesn't come up in general web search nor in a search of the forum.

A good day is a day all your birds are happy and healthy.

I'm so sorry to hear your budgie is in crisis.
I can't find any information with regard to using the green-lipped mussel powder for budgies - only for people and for dogs.

For people: It can cause some side effects such as itching, a type of arthritis called gout, swelling, abdominal pain, heart burn, diarrhea, nausea, and intestinal gas.
In rare cases, it might cause liver problems.

Information re: GLM for dogs (From petmd.com) :

There have been several studies showing their usefulness in treating osteoarthritis in pets. One of those studies, published in the Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine journal, evaluated the response of dogs suffering from chronic pain associated with osteoarthritis. Dogs who took a green-lipped mussel preparation for eight weeks experienced less pain and locomotion difficulties than those who took a placebo. In addition, dogs taking the supplement also needed less carprofen—a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID)—to fight chronic pain.

Part of the power of green lipped mussels lies in their unique compound content. “The ETA has been shown in studies to be much more powerful at fighting inflammation than just the EPA and DHA found in fish oils,” explains Morgan. “In addition, green lipped mussels also provide polysulfated glycosaminoglycans (PSGAGs), the building blocks for cartilage and joint fluid,” says Morgan.

This effect has been confirmed through a number of studies, including one where scientists discovered that green lipped mussels seem to block the pro-inflammatory reaction without causing, and maybe even helping to reduce, the gastrointestinal irritation connected with NSAID treatment in dogs.

The verdict? Basically any chronic inflammatory condition in dogs may benefit from the use of green lipped mussels, according to Petty. “It is well known that many chronic skin diseases and inflammatory diseases like asthma respond to Omega-3's, and could respond to green lipped mussels,” adds Petty.

I’m so sorry to hear about your budgie. Can you try contacting an avian vet? They may or may not know. Sometimes it’s hard to find specific unusual information on the internet.

Thank you for all the information you looked up. Perhaps, I will consult with my vet over it and see if it helps at all. She may be suffering from joint pain.

I hope that you are able to find a treatment plan that will work for her.

She appears to have pulled through yet again. Her posture isn't great, but she doesn't look like she is dying. Her medicine cabinet consists of baytril, metronidazole, Gabapentin, metochlopramide, calcium glubionate, nystatin, sulcrate, vit E, iodine, black cherry juice and aloe vera juice. Not all of them are used all the time. She is around nine now.

Wow! That's a lot of medications for your little one. She's very fortunate to have you giving her such love and care.
