Question I think she/he has a respiratory infection.

I just got a new little budgie on Monday. I noticed today that his/her breathing seems to be labored. I am not sure if it is due to him/her still being stressed or being sick. Any tips or Ideas from those who are more experienced budgie owners?

I may be just an over worried mama after loosing a budgie right before this one came home. I have a heater on now with a bowl of water to try and create some humidity in my bedroom and to keep my room temperature warmer for him/her.

I added a link to a video on youtube I uploaded for those to watch her.

Hi Kairi and to Talk Budgies!

Yes, your budgie does appear to be ill and the best thing you can do at this point is keep her warm, use the warm steam mist to keep her airways open and get her into an Avian Vet for a proper diagnosis and treatment protocol as soon as possible.

Please let us know how she's doing once you've seen the vet.

Udate!

After staying up all night making the room warm and with some humidity, she is much better. Chirping and alert. Keeping the room A little warmer then normal still.

She is also eating fine, thankfully. Droppings are normal too. I am looking around at different vets to find a good vet for her that knows birds.

I think by accident the room got to cold. I have decided to go by a room thermometer to make sure both humidity and temp stay at good levels.

Budgies have a higher body temperature than we do, so they do need extra warmth. Air currents (like from a ceiling fan, etc.) can also harm their respiratory systems.

Whenever Sammy is feeling a little under the weather, I immediately pull out a heating pad and clip it to half of his cage so that he can get closer to it if he's feeling cold.

Are her droppings small or do they have dark green stains around the dropping? This would indicate that she's not eating enough. You might try giving her some egg food (you can make your own using some warm - not hot - hard boiled egg, some flax seed or canary seed, some of her food, and some veggies if she eats them). It might help to get her energy up while you're waiting for a vet appointment.

When calling around, you might want to ask if they will re-check your budgie after a week of treatment free of charge (like a follow-up visit).

Good luck and let us know how she gets on!

Oh, and WELCOME to Talk Budgies!
