Default I need help with my budgie?!

Hello there. I bought a budgie two days ago from the pet store. He is between 2-5 months old and is a male named Kirby. I got him out on the first day I had him (I know, it was wrong) but he wasn't eating, drinking or moving. He now eats out of my hand and will step up but he won't come to me voluntarily. He stays in the same spot all day and his tail shakes a bit. Today he started plucking out his feathers. I had to take him out to stop. There is no local vet I can go too so can someone help me? Is this all down to stress because he's new? If so, how can I comfort him. His droppings are normal, no crusting on his cere or beak. What's wrong?

Hi and to Talk Budgies, Tammy

Budgies are often submissive for a few days because they're terrified.
Kirby may sit quietly and not move, chirp or sing.
If he sits near the bottom of the cage, you can scatter some seed on the cage floor so he can find food until he learns where his food dish is.

It is recommended that you do not handle or touch him for about 2 weeks.

I'd suggest covering the top and three sides of his cage and playing some calming music on a low volume for him. You can sit near the cage and talk with him reassuringly as well.

Do you know how old Kirby is? There is a good chance he's simply preening his feathers if he's going through his first molt at this time.

Can you post a picture of him?

I suggest you do your best to locate an Avian Vet or an exotic vet in your area. It is very important to have have support if your budgie becomes ill and requires treatment.

Hello and welcome, perhaps Kirby is simply preening, budgies are impeccable regarding the care of their feathers. Is Kirby actually pulling out feathers and leaving bald patches? he could also be going through his first moult.
try to read through the stickies and the links provided they will help with a lot of information. In the mean time sit and interact with your new Budgie and enjoy his lovely antics.

Welcome to TB forum! Enjoy your stay!
Your new budgie is getting used to the new surrounding, you, his new cage home, his food, everything! You have to build a trusting relationship between you two, by doing nothing that would scare him. You received great advice from Faery Bee and the other members. Patience is the key to everything. Hopefully your new friend will come out of his shell and feel content soon!

Thank you for the detailed answers
Kirby is between 2-5 months old. When he pulls his feathers, he grabs hold of it from the bottom and pulls his beak to the end of the feather. Is this preening? No big feathers are falling out but little white fluffy ones sometimes fall off him.

Hi Tammy and welcome to TB

Yup that's preening the down feathers (underneath layer of fluff) is what's falling out. Sounds like your little guy is starting to make himself at home

Do you have any pictures of him? What's his name?

Niamh

From the information in your last post, we can validate Kirby is simply preening his feathers which is perfectly normal.

Since you are new to budgies and budgie care, please be sure you take the time to read the information in the links I provided for you in my previous post. You'll learn all kinds of information that will help you give Kirby a long and happy life!
