My budgie cannot fly all of a sudden

Hi there,
I have a sick budgie who has been diagnosed with crop infection. The vet has prescribed him nystatin and mycobacil (sorry about spelling). The vet has also asked me to clean his vent area as he has poop all stuck around there as well as diarrhoea. I have done all that. Due to his condition he has lost some weight.

However, today I have noticed that he cannot fly for some reason. When he does try to fly he falls and when he hits the ground his beak goes forward and hits the floor and then he gets back upright to get balance. He has also been crashing into walls, when he was a great flyer.

I will be on the phone with the vet about this tomorrow, but I am concerned that what is this? I have had training on how to grasp him, so I can be quite certain it isn't the way I have held him (with a towel), although he does flap his wings a lot while grasped.

Please help, why is he not being able to fly? Is it because of his illness and weight loss, or could it something else? he can preen.

Thanks,
Sam

It is hard to know what has causeed his loss of ability to fly.
It sounds as though he may be having balance problems which could be due to an inner eye infection.

Since your budgie is ill, he shouldn't be allowed to be out flying around at this time. I would suggest you put him in a small hospital cage and ensure he is kept warm enough and ensure he stays hydrated.

Hopefully your Avian vet will be able to give you advice without needing to do an additional exam. Please be sure to update us on his condition.

Hi thank you for that
The reason why he is out flying is only when I have to give him his medication through syringe, and I noticed it then.
He has one antibiotic for his yeast infection, could that help with the ear infection?
And do you think budgies can be able to fly again or not?
he is not moulting
thnx sam

Your budgie may be weak from being ill and that may be why he is having problems flying. If you put him in a small hospital cage and cafefully pick him up to give him his medication, he should not have the opportunity to try to fly again while he is ill.

I would suggest you contact your Avian Vet and let him know about the new development with your budgie's flight ability.
As the vet saw him recently, this information is important to convey to him.

When you speak with the vet, be sure to ask what he thinks may be the cause of the limited flight ability and problems with balance as well as about the best foods to feed your budgie while he is taking his antibiotics and fighting a possible crop-infection.

I agree with everything Deborah has posted. With the infection's and illness he is fighting, and the loss of weight, he is no doubt weakened, and may have temporary balance issues. Keeping him warm, hydrated, and quiet is very important along with running this all past the vet. Please keep us posted on your bird's progress, I'm sure when everything is treated and he is back to normal, he will be a great flier again....:)

Budgies with yeast infections need to be fed a diet that is helpful as Deborah has provided the link please try to follow this. NO human foods! Also get some probiotics into him as soon as you can, being on antibiotics changes the gut bacteria.
Keep him in his cage, when giving his meds make sure he doesn't escape as in his condition it is dangerous poor boy. Make sure you keep his vent cleaned regularly. I would be ringing the vet as soon as possible if it were my bird. I hope he is feeling better soon.
