Unhappy Vomiting and Trembling

Hey everyone. I have some bad news. When I was feeding the kids around 1:30pm, I noticed Ju vomiting. His head was lurching forward like a human or dog's might while throwing up. The vomit was a clump of undigested seed. He retched (and vomited) a couple more times. He was clearly distressed and began spreading his wings and trembling.

At around 1:52pm, he vomited several more times. This time, he shook his head while individual seeds sprayed from his mouth. He also vomited while retching. He was able to hop around and fly during this time, however it was clear he wasn't feeling good and was nervous.

He is currently standing on his bungee with his eyes closed while standing on both feet. From time to time he really spreads his wings and trembles quite strongly. His breathing seems slightly laboured, although this isn't unusual for him.

I'm going to take him to the vet, but it's the long weekend so the vet isn't in until Tuesday.

Yesterday I gave them sprouts with dandelion root and probiotics, RO water, mango, chickweed, purslane, celery, and plantain seeds. I didn't see them touch their mango, and I threw it out after around three hours, although it had been in the sun.

Ju was having one of his good days yesterday, and has seemed quite happy and active overall during the past week.

2:30pm
He's vomiting again! He's shaking his head, although I not sure if vomit is coming out. Ziggy's trying to have sex with him now! He's kissing him too !

I've put some Nekton-S and apple cider vinegar in their water.

Sorry to hear Ju is not well. I would separate him from your other birds if possible to let him rest and in case he has something contagious.

Vet is a good idea. As is the ACV. Hope he gets well soon.

I guess I should put him in that one flight cage I have. I was wondering if I should, but if he's sick I wouldn't be surprised if the others are sick already. I'll take a quick shower, disinfect the other cage, then put him in. I'm not sure where I'd put the cage, though, since people are going to be using the dining room, the kitchen eating area is too bright, and I don't know if he should be close enough to hear the others. I'm wondering if I should put the cage in my room upstairs.

I'm guessing I should wipe down the cage they're in right now since he vomited all over in it. I know I should use bleach or something, but I think I'll have to make do with pure white vinegar since there's no way I could get the other four in a different room while I clean.

Thanks guys! It's just so sudden! The vomit isn't brown or anything, either. Just hardly any clear liquid with undigested seed. Honestly, it just looks like regurgitation, but I know it isn't.

If it turns out it is something, I'm probably going to have to have my others treated, too! Alice has been off since I took her home, but I thought it might just be the way she is because of psychological trauma from living with a hoarder. Charlie's been a little off the past few days, but I just sort of brushed it off because it isn't unusual for my budgies to act strange from time to time. I mean, he's a senior after all. Now that I think of it, Samantha seems a bit off too! Or am I just imagining things!?

I don't care what my parents say! The next time I get a budgie, I'm going to have a complete exam done along with blood tests, fecal analysis, and a crop swab.

Might it be his cancer? I don't really think it is since his cancer's been getting better. I mean, he's been healthier this week than he has been the past few weeks. His tumor even appears to have shrunk!

Poor little guy's been having a rough year! At least Ziggy isn't bullying him since he started vomiting, but he is trying to mate with him. Hold on Ju! I'll separate you from the little sex addict!

Good news! Juey's looking much better! He's a bit sleepy, but he isn't trembling anymore and I haven't seen him vomit again. I'm still going to take him to the vet on Tuesday to have him examined along with his poop and a crop swab. It would also be interesting to have him x-rayed to see how bad his cancer is, but I don't really want to stress him out even more, nor do I want to pay a lot to have him x-rayed. I'm probably going to take Alice in too this week so I can have some tests done on her.

Charlie's also doing this thing with his head that looks like he might be having a seizure. Oh, and Alice is crying. Dang it! I'm going to be broke! Good thing they're cute :3.

On another good note, Ziggy's being quite affectionate towards Juju.

Wishing you all the best with the vet visit on Tuesday, Robyn.

I'll be looking forward to your update after their appointment.

Thanks, Deborah! I've decided against separating them, since I totally don't have enough cages to separate my potentially ill birds. Man, I need three more hospital cages for them! Charlie's acting a little off and may or may not be having seizures; Ju was vomiting; Samantha might be a little off; and who knows what's wrong with Alice!

I usually just ignore anything odd, but if it's persistent or sudden, then I usually freak out ...and then it turns out they were being weirdos.

Hopefully Ju was just feeling a bit off today. You know how sometimes you're feeling totally fine, then all of a sudden you feel nauseous and throw up? Then you're suddenly fine again. I hope it's just something like that.

Hopefully they don't get any false negatives for Ju and Alice. I definitely think there's something off with Alice.

-----------------------

Okay, so Ju looks way better. If I hadn't checked in on them at all for those three or so hours, I wouldn't have known anything had been wrong. He's singing, playing, socializing, and is very hungry! I'm thinking he might have had a couple of bad seeds or something. I've been having some trouble with the seed mix I got them for sprouting. It's poor quality and I always get some moldy seeds in each batch of sprouts I do. I'm going to have to find a different supplier.

Honestly, he's looking great now! I'm still planning on bringing him to the vet on Tuesday, but if he's looking this good until Tuesday I'm thinking I won't. Honestly, around an hour ago I watched him wolf down a bunch of sprouts and dry seeds. He doesn't look stressed anymore and has his energy back. He probably just needed a good purge. It's kind of like the time my cockatiel, Colipso (I've rehomed her), was spraying seeds out of her mouth while shaking her head. She was randomly vomiting but she was totally fine.

I'm definitely bringing Alice in, though. Even if it's just for peace of mind.

Hey Robyn - is Ju still doing OK?
Bluebie is rallying after regressing for over a month or so - his cere has turned almost completely blue again from a very dark brown - (and so the roller coaster ride continues...)

Robyn, I'm sorry this is happening! Crossing fingers that Ju stays fine through the holiday weekend. I hope Alice and everyone is okay too. I know all about BIG vet bills... no fun for sure! Will my credit cards ever have zero balance again because of the birds?!

Please keep us posted ....and good luck!
