Default Abnormal head bobbing, sleeping, and puffing, what's wrong?

I was trusted with my friend's two parakeets, a male and female. One, the male, is more friendly and steps up occasionally. The female runs away from me. Anyways, the male all of a sudden became more friendly. When he steps up, he usually turns around and jumps back to the cage within a few seconds. But now he stays on my finger for much longer and let's me pet him, all while being puffed up. I open the cage for them when I'm in my room to let them fly around and he sits there and puffs up and hides his head in his back feathers, which he hasn't done much in my time having him. He usually bobs his head while singing, but now he does it more often even without singing. A few feathers on his head are out of place (I don't know if that means anything).
He still eats and flies, though is really puffy even after landing, is very tolerant of me holding him, sleeps more often, and bobs his head a lot. The female seems unaffected.
I fed them shredded carrots which I normally do, but I added a little bit of Apple this time, neither really ate any, but could that have done it?
I don't want to let my friend down, so if anyone can suggest something I can do to help him or even tell me what may be wrong, it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and to Talk Budgies!

The apple you gave them had nothing to do with the budgie's current behavior. I'm assuming you did not give them the apple seeds, correct?

The male may be starting a molt, sometimes that makes them a bit more sleepy. Do you see little pin feathers on the budgie's head?

How long are you keeping the budgies for your friend?
Can you post a picture of the budgie?
Is he eating, drinking and pooping normally?
Did the friend give you instructions on whom to contact (Avian Vet's number) if they became ill?

Sorry for all the questions, but the more information you can provide the better educated guess we may be able to make.

Hi there and welcome to Talk Budgies

It's great you've agreed to watch your friend's budgies They're sweet little birds, aren't they?

I agree with everything that FaeryBee has asked and given advice on. I hope your little budgies are just fine and keep us posted! We'd love to meet them sometime if you have pictures to share

Hope to see you around and feel free to ask about anything you're unsure of as we'd be more than happy to help!

Hello and welcome to the forum
Is he molting?
Does he have a runny poop?
Is he shivering time to time?
Is room warm enough?
Thank you!
