Follow-up CenterThreads made in the Emergency Room forum will be moved here by staff as a way to follow-up with members after their budgie emergency.
This keeps the E.R. for only the most current emergencies.
I have recently lost my parakeet of many years and still in the grieving process. A week later I decided to welcome a pair of new young Budgies (Luna and peeps) to their forever home.
Upon Purchase they were very healthy looking, flying around the bird proof room and all seemed fine until this-
Sunday. I arrived home and Luna appeared a little sleepy, still flying and eating a lot.
Monday- Luna appeared to fluffed up and drinking more than usual, still flying but the poop was more liquid. Overall being puffy had me concerned so I warmed up her area and called two vets. I made the appointment for Tuesday Morning.
Tuesday (VET time)-Luna not eating much, fluffy & liquid poop. Vet gives an examination, weight of 31 Grams, takes a throat swab and vent swab for chlamydophila which takes 2 weeks for results. Vet prescribes ciprofloxacin to be administered 2x daily for several days. No official Diagnosis except to Keep warm and quiet.
Yesterday-I remove peeps and Luna Appears to be improving. I purchased watermelon, Bananas, oranges and spinach and she samples each. Poop returning to consistency. She is flying in the cage and very active. Thinking she is almost out of the woods.
Today is 911- Luna is refusing to eat anything at all. She is no longer drinking. She no longer puffy likely due to lack of energy. She will not open her eyes and appears to have run out of steam. I have administered antibiotic and tried to give water with a dropper. I believe this may be lunas final hours and am open to any suggestions.
I think the spinach may have been a bad idea. I am currently trying to give her water drop by drop through the side of her beak.
I am open to any immediate suggestions.
I will post a pic here shortly.
Did the vet do any testing of Luna's poop for Mega bacteria?
get some Pediolyte and soak some millet or get the liquid down via a syringe, keep him extra warm. He needs urgent avian knowledge and help as soon as possible poor baby by the sounds. Please let us know how he is going soon. Healing prayers and loving thoughts to you at this time.
Unfortunately all of the poop they attempted to scrape was liquid and they given me a test tube that I can not fill yet. I called them today and they advise that I can bring in poop of her Partner (Peeps). I will try to l submit this tomorrow
I have plastic wrap under her to try and catch what I can.
Temperature where she is has been maintained at 85-89 degrees and that is good but think it is accelerating dehydration.
I agree on the liquids.
Thank you for the prayers. I will likely be up all night with her.
I wish I can do more. Is the mega bacteria issue common? I am majorly concerned
Without confirmation from testing it is hard to say what the problem is. The electrolytes hopefully will get some nourishment into her system. What is her breathing like? Can you feel her keel bone easily, do you notice her being more attentive to her belly or vent area? Scratching , kicking at looking from side to side , adjusting her crop more so than normal?
If she doesn't eat I would be taking her to the vet for emergency crop feeding and more tests.
I am with her right now, I will post a pic. She is just very still, not moving. She did just surprise me and ate about 13 small seeds. her Breathing is normal and calm. The vet did not think she had mites as her lungs sounded good (she said)
No scratching, Kicking or adjusting her crop. She just moved for the seeds and appears to be sleeping now.
I did notice the feel of her keel bone much more easily today than ever before. Definitely think she is continuing to lose weight.
I just purchased a scale but will not be here until Saturday. I may go buy another one tomorrow.
I am hoping I can make it to get the crop feeding in the morning along with a fecal test.
This is a really tough one.
She definitely looks sick the sweet little angel. She is holding her head still and not laying or leaning that is good. Keep her in a small enclosed area wih some form of heat either a hot water bottle wrapped or a light of some sort, make sure she can move away if too hot . Does she still grip and hold on with her feet are they hot or cold to the touch at all? Sorry for all the questions
Please Ask Away, She just drank The carrot juice That I had for her. Do you happen know if this is ok? would this hurt the antibiotic process?
I am elated that she drank something- First thing all day.
I have a bulb right over her bringing the temp up to 90 and it is about 82 away from it and thermostat set to 80 in the house. she is safe to roam.
Her feet are warm and she has energy to grip but I put her on the towel hoping to conserve the grip energy.
Almost finished with the mixture and making a special sleeping box for her.
