Default My Budgie has hurt his toe

Hi... my poor Billy hurt his foot this morning... he is limping but doesn't put his foot down often and hobbles about on one foot... he is eating and drinking ok. I have put him in a smaller cage from his friend to give him some quiet time and put his water and food all on the same level so he hasn't got to climb about too much... do you think R and R is sufficient or does he need to see a vet...

I have attached two pictures...

i just went thru this - if it is fractured he is in pain - i would get an xray - warning this will not be cheap if it is fractured - nor is the xray.

I'm sorry your Billy got hurt. Did you happen to see how he hurt his foot?
By looking at the foot, it seems he hurt his smallest toe. At least that toe looks bruised.
Keep a close eye on him and see if he tries to use the foot even if just for a few seconds. You can also check the circulation of blood and check the temperature of both feet by having Billy perched on your finger for a bit.
Looking at the photo, his foot doesn't look that bad and he may have just a sprain. If you see Billy's foot is getting swollen and see an increase on Billy's discomfort, then a trip to the vet will be in order, so that he is properly checked and treated.

I'm wishing all the best for your Billy and hope he will have a steady and full recovery.

Thank you... he does put his foot down occasionally and he's not tame as such, he doesn't like hands..(I am working on it though). but he listens to my voice and I have managed to get quite close .. I am registered with the PDSA and we have a hospital near us, so I am going to ring them... Thank you again...xxx

The fact that Billy puts his foot down at times is good, and if he is able to grip the perch the same way he does his good foot, even if only momentarily, that's also a positive sign. Good luck with your boy!

Hello... I have spoken to a vet and she said that as long as he is eating and drinking ok, and has now started to put his foot down, and he has been chirping away... Billy should be ok... she said that if I am still worried at anytime I can take him in... so I feel like I can stop panicking, even though I am still worried.... thanks for all your advice... x

You're very welcome!
It's good to know that Billy's mood and behaviour hasn't been affected by the little accident and it's very likely his foot will naturally heal on its own in just a few days.

Since things are progressing well with Billy, you have talked to the vet and there is no longer a real sense of urgency, I have moved your thread from the Emergency Room to the Follow-up Center section of Talk Budgies.

I agree with all the great information As long as you keep an eye on him, I'm sure he'll be just fine. If you notice his foot is a little swollen, you can put some room-temperature chamomile tea or have him stand in it as this will reduce the pain and swelling.
Keep us posted and I hope little Billy feels better
