Default Foot gone partially numb

This morning, my bird Holmes (about 8 yrs old) suddenly lost the ability to fully use her left foot. I know she's not in any pain (she would make no hesitation in letting everyone know). She's fumbled her way to a thicker perch and is beginning to excessively groom that part of her foot.

There is no emergency bird care where I live. I'm going to have to wait till tomorrow to take her to the vet. Any thoughts? Any way I can make her more comfortable? Is she in danger of chewing off part of her foot?

It's possible that something is pressing on the nerves to the foot causing a numbness or tingling feeling causing her to groom the area. An avian vet would be able to determine the cause. I have a male that has a testicular tumor that periodically causes similar symptoms.

Are you able to pick her up to examine the foot to see if there is a sore on it?

You can soak her foot in room temperature chamomile tea which will help soothe it and reduce any inflammation. You can also offer her room temperature chamomile tea to drink as that may help her relax a wee bit.

She's not tame enough to let me pick her up, but she did allow me to get very close and examine it. It looks a teenie bit sore under one of the back toes, but unsure whether that's from her fussing over it.

I will definitely try the chamomile tea, though.

Good luck and please let us know in this thread how Holmes is doing after her vet visit tomorrow.

I'm going to move your thread over to "Follow-Up" at this time

Hope the tea helps and the vet can get to the bottom of things for her. The fact that she is grooming her foot all the time means it definitely is causing her discomfort of some kind. Poor girl. Get well soon Holmes.

So, it's most likely gout. She still has feeling in all her toes. Whereas gout is painful in humans, the vet says it causes paralysis in budgies. So, we're giving her electrolytes to flush the uric acid out of her system quicker, and we've made her cage safer for her in case she falls. we have a follow up appointment in three weeks.
