Default Sitting in the emergency room now

I just got home from school and Calypso had blood all over her beak and right wing.. she picked a blood feather... she finished molting a month ago, so it's not from that. I was gone all weekend and my roommate neglected her, left her in a dark quiet room and it sort of set her over the edge. She's been picking all week but this is not good. The vet has her in the back, they picked the bleeding feather out and now they're making sure it's stopped. She is still on a seed diet so he's giving her a Vit. A injection in case she's picking from having nutritional issues. Now I have to find somewhere that has Harrisons food and switch her to pellets. I wish I had the room to get her a friend so I could help her neuroses she's such a sweet girl, I feel so bad for her.

Poor girl, I hope she'll be OK! I'm in the process of trying to switch mine to pellets....she thinks they are something to play with so the switch isn't going well! Good luck with your girl!

Oh Calypso, I'm so sorry that this happened. I do hope that she will be ok. If you get some golden millet, it has a much higher level of vitamin A in it, and may aid you in the transition from seed to pellets. I have actually been giving my Lyla this to help get her weight back up. If she's going to have "candy", it's going to be a healthier "candy". Also, we give our flock Dr. Harvey's Best Parakeet Food. It comes in 2 and 4 pound bags, the 2 pounder running about 15-ish dollars. I think if you go to doggiefood.com, they sell it there, and I think for your first order they give you the shipping for free. It's as close to organic as you can get without it being certified. At least it will be a healthier seed mix. Plus it's got freeze dried veg and dehydrated fruits in it.

Back to the topic at hand, I really hope everything works out for her, and she pulls through this ok. I suggest that next time you are gone for that amount of time that you may want to look into getting a trusted person to take care of her so that this doesn't happen again! Good luck!

Sorry, just to add, you will want to get a gram scale when you go to switch her over to pellets to keep an eye on her weight. That way she doesn't lose so much weight that she falls ill. Also, it helps to have a small stand perch for her to stand on whilst being weighed. We used one from a Perfect Polly we got. It works flawlessly. Anyway, Good luck!!!

I really hope Calypso has recovered from both the blood loss and her visit to the vets, well done for your swift action, sorry but I would be giving the roommate a few choice words

Oh no, Lucky you got to the vet . Converting to pellets is a slow and painful process, I actually give my guys crumbles a small amount of seed and a much green grass, vegies as possible. Occasionally they get egg and biscuit mix as they don't get millet. Take it slowly, I agree with the scales, is it at all possible to have Calypso with somebody who will be more in tune to her needs. Sending healing thoughts her way

EDIT: As the Emergency has been taken care of I am now moving this thread to the Follow Up Forum.

Wow if that was me I would be so angry with that person. I would go MENTAL at them. I am glad your birdy is ok. How sad of someone who can not even feed and look after a bird for a short time.

I'm so sorry you both had to go through this, I'm glad she's recovering so far.
