Hi everyone - new budgie mum here!
Our little guy Thor has been acting a bit strange the past few days when coming out of his cage (being very quiet, not flying or playing) and I noticed this morning that the area around his mouth is quite red looking.
I tried to get a good picture, but it was quite tricky. Does this look like something we should be worried about? Any help or advice is appreciated!
Your little Thor is adorable.
However, the area around his mouth looks extremely sore and inflamed.
You might rinse that area with a sterile saline solution to help soothe it a little.
I recommend you get Thor into see an Avian Vet as soon as possible in order to get the proper diagnosis and treatment plan. You certainly don't want that area to become infected.
Avian Vets have special training to determine the cause of symptoms resulting from illness or trauma.
When you rely on unskilled individuals, you delay effective treatment. This can prolong suffering that may be avoidable.
The bird will often require a more intense, prolonged treatment with a poorer chance of full recover than it would have if you
seek prompt professional diagnosis and treatment at the first sign of illness.
Having your new budgie examined by an Avian Vet allows you to develop a good relationship with the vet in case your bird needs care for an injury or illness in the future. Additionally, it is always helpful for the vet to have a baseline for your bird to refer to should it need future treatment.

Thank you for all the good vibes and well wishes Thor is being seen on Thursday morning. Although he is a little less active than normal, he is still keeping his feathers beautifully preened and singing along to his favourite music - glad to see him in good spirits even if he is feeling under the weather!
Today is a most happy Thorsday as my little guy is fit as a fiddle!
He's a tiny bit underweight, but other than that a very healthy budgie he was commended for his good, calm behaviour - especially as we were in a room with 7/8 vet students and a senior consultant! I'm absolutely over the moon and so proud of him for staying calm through the whole ordeal
Oh! The red/pinkness around his beak was simply staining from red pepper/lettuce... quite funny now you think about it!
