Follow-up CenterThreads made in the Emergency Room forum will be moved here by staff as a way to follow-up with members after their budgie emergency.
This keeps the E.R. for only the most current emergencies. Thread Description:don't know what's wrong
My sweet Lola is showing signs of illness since yesterday afternoon and I have absolutly no idea what is wrong with her.
I'm stressed out, of course. Taking her to the avian vet this afternoon. Her feathers are all fluffed out, her wings are down and she's sleeping more than usual.
There have been no changes in her food, environment, anything really. I've had her for 7 years now and she's probably 9 years old. Billy, her bf, died last January and I can't imagine losing Lola now.
I really have no idea what could be wrong. The only weird thing that happened lately is that a few days ago she started coming out of her cage to stand on a little bowl where we put the millet seeds. The bowl had been in the same spot for months and she never tried to go to it before. But a few days ago she started trying to get to it, she finally managed to get to it and for about 3 days she ate more millet than she usually does. But I doubt that's what would get her sick to the point of being all fluffed out.
Yesterday I saw that she wasn't as clean as usual and it started worrying me. I held her in a towel to clean her vent a bit. After that she was a bit upset and wet. I feel bad because I used the hairdryer to try and get her dry and then it seems like she got more fluffed out. I then realized that my hairdryer was probably sending teflon in her lungs. Though she's not dizzy or anything and still flies and flies well.
I was hoping she would be better this morning, but she's not. She still eats, drinks, cleans her feathers and her droppings seem about normal...
It's good you are getting her checked out. I would mention the behavior change to the vet and see what he think's, but like Deb said, the fact she is eating well, and her droppings look normal are good. Did she just finish a molt or maybe getting ready to start one ? Keep us posted on her...

The vet is keeping her for minimum one night. Said that she found her too weak to put her through tests tonight, but they will test her droppings tonight.
The vet said many things:
1. that Lola's beak has a blue tint
2. that Lola's belly is a bit big and also with a blue tint
3. that there was some gaz in Lola's throat
4. that Lola was weak because she wasn't screaming, fighting back, trying to escape, etc.
5. there were a few blood spots on some of Lola's feathers
So, from that she says it could be an ulcer in the digestive system, an infection of in the digestive system or cancer.
They will give her fluids and stuff to try and make her stronger for tomorrow. The test they want to do tomorrow is the x-ray with the barium. Then we'll see what that says. Ultimately they might do a blood test, a biochemical check I think is the name.
They said that any of those 3 possibilities would mainly happen because she's old and can get sick more easily because of that. So, that's it for now...
I miss her. The house is so quiet right now it's sad. I keep looking over at her cage expecting to see her.
I am so sorry to hear that little Lola is ill. We will be sending positive and healing thoughts your way. We will of course also pray for Lola's recovery. Lets hope that it's an "easy" fix with this. We're wishing you only the best!!!
Thank you for my wonderful signature Deb!!!
