Budgie Eye Problem

1 Attachment(s)
Hi, my male budgie Zee has had a sudden, swollen left eye for about 5 days. It's red and dry, he has been rubbing it and occasionally scratching at it. He is eating and drinking fine but is definitely not feeling well. He is not as active but can fly around the cage. My Vet is not Avian and I don't have one in my area. Does anybody know what treatment might work to alleviate the swelling and/or pain? Thanks.

Welcome to the forums. :)
I have moved your thread to the Emergency Room section of Talk Budgies where it's most appropriate.

I'm very sorry for the condition in which your budgie is currently in.
From that photo I can see a big inflammation on the eye and unfortunately it's very likely that basic care provided at home will not effectively solve the issue, as the case seems to be very advanced. Your budgie needs urgent professional medical attention and to be properly diagnosed and treated by a specialized avian vet.
If there is none in your area, you can have a regular vet consult with an avian vet and upon explaining the situation you can get the right medication to treat your budgie.

Have you quarantined this budgie from the rest of the flock? If not, then I suggest you separate this budgie, as a safety measure and in hopes of the disease to not spread in case it's contagious.

Hi there and :welcome: to the forums!

I agree with Aluz, your budgie is in very bad condition and if he isn't treated, things could get much worse. It appears to be an infection that has inflamed the eye to such a degree he should really see a vet.

Although you aren't located by a board certified avian vet, I researched and found links to two clinics in Winnipeg that treat birds as "exotic" pets. Often, they will be more effective in treating and diagnosing your little one.

The last link is a list of vets that treat birds in Canada, listed by province.

Please let us know how it goes at the vet! In the meantime, you can put a few drops of sterile saline solution on his eye to moisten it and rinse out any particles.

Keep us posted on his condition and we hope he feels better soon! :fingerx:

You've been given excellent advice by aluz and resources by Starling Wings.

Please let us know how your little budgie is doing after you have consulted with the vet.

Sending lots of prayers for a full and speedy recovery for your little fellow.

Welcome to talk budgies. Sorry your little friend has a serious issue with an eye. As has been said, your regular vet can maybe consult an avian specialist, it is certainly apparent that professional help is needed to get this going in the
right direction. Prayers for treatment and recovery.

Hello how did you go getting an appointment for your budgie's eye to be attended to? I would say he needs to be given antibiotics and have the area bathed and seen to. Hoping to hear back soon from you regarding the issue.:S

This eye "issue" came on quite suddenly. My regular Vet has seen the pictures and can't offer any advice and we don't have an aviary Vet in our area. She has sent the picture to a Vet that she knows of for some advice but I haven't heard back yet.

I hope you will get some answers very soon because delaying effective treatment may have direct consequences on your budgie's eyesight.

From doing a quick google search of avian vets in the Ontario area I found a few matches. While there may not be one clinic nearby sometimes we just have to take longer trips to provide much needed medical care to our pets.

Whenever needed I take my birds to the out of town clinic or hospital vet where they have an avian specialist. If need be, I will even go to the capital city which is a longer ride still.

I am wondering about how the eye is doing also...from when you posted it has been 9 days from when you noticed it. sure hope you get some answers soon!!

Are there Avain Vets that you can text a picture to yourself? and they do care that way?

You don't want to risk your budgie losing the sight in its eye and possibly even worse.
I'd do whatever it takes to get to an Avian Vet that can provide your bird with the care it needs.

Avian Vets have special training to determine the cause of symptoms resulting from illness or trauma. This is important as "regular" vets will often overlook symptoms that are quickly obvious to an Avian Vet.
When you rely on anyone who has not had training in Avian diagnosis and care, you may be delaying effective treatment. This can prolong suffering that may be avoidable.
The bird will often require a more intense, prolonged treatment with a poorer chance of full recover than it would have if you seek prompt professional diagnosis and treatment at the first sign of illness.

There are definitely on-line Avian Vets you can contact and I would certainly be doing so if you are unwilling to drive the distance necessary to meet with an Avian Vet in person.
