Default Follow-up visit with vet tomorrow! (update)

Basil has been on Potassium Benzonate Powder mixed with her water for the past month. As I've mentioned before they're treating Basil for Avian Gastric Yeast (AVG) She's been doing pretty well overall. We've been treating her for AVG even though the test came back negative. Basil has been doing fairly well. I've been going through my own struggles and really believe Basil picks up on this. I try my best though, some days are better than others.

The past few days she's been a bit less playful and a bit reluctant to eat, but is eating. She also is staying in her cage more. At times, if I see she hasn't eaten in a while I'll hand feed her. She seems a bit better today though! I take her to the vet tomorrow for a check-up. I got funding again for this appointment!! It'll be good to have her checked again.

I'm a proud momma to say that Basil is really taking to the pellets from the samples the vet gave me. (Harrisons) She has a dish in her cage that she doesn't really go to, but once I buy a bag I'll be able to fill it with more. Just as I'm writing this she came out of her cage and had some pellets outside of her cage. I'm so happy to see her eating it, when she has access to the seeds and millet in her cage. I'll have to do some reading on her about doing the switchover. I re-call Faery-Bee's idea of limiting the amount of time the seeds are in her cage. I'm thinking of putting a dish of pellets beside her seeds but worried about stressing her out. (She's enjoying scrambled eggs now too!)

If any of you have been through this with your budgies, do you have any thoughts or questions that would be important for me to ask the vet.. since I'll be seeing her tomorrow? One question I have is about the probiotic paste they gave me to give Basil. Basil will not take it, and it's pre-measured in 2 syringes and it's too difficult to give her push the exact .05mg from the syringe while holding her in my other hand. Already tried that, with a mess! I'll be in touch with how the vet visit goes. Please keep some positive thoughts or prayers for us. Thanks for listening.

I'm glad Basil seems to be doing well with the Sodium Benzoate and the Harrison's pellets!

You mentioned the last couple of days she has been less playful and a bit more reluctant to eat...
Has she been sitting fluffed up?
Is she drinking normally?
Are her poops normal?

Putting pellets in her cage in a separate dish from her seed shouldn't cause her any stress.

I'd ask the vet how long the current Sodium Benzoate treatment is to be continued.
When Basil has completed it, does the vet recommend the regimen be repeated on a regular basis after a certain period of time has elapsed? (e.g. every three months or six months)?

I'll be looking forward to your update after Basil's appointment and hope everything goes very well for her (and you)!

So glad to hear Basil is feeling a little better, probiotics are an essential part of an AGY budgie's diet I feel. I use veta farm powder Poly Aid Plus, and sprinkle it over the seed crumble mix. I also make sure the cage is as clean as possible, toys and food dishes. Take some paper from the bottom of the cage with poop samples to be checked under microscope. Good luck.

Default Off to the vet this afternoon!

Thanks for the replies. Faery Bee, I'll write down your questions for the vet. Thank-you so much.. and about the probiotics.

As for Basil, she seems 'fine' no fluffed up feathers, poop seems normal, drinking as I notice. Likely Basil will put on another 'show' for the vet and pretend she's all fine. I'll let the vet know that she hasn't been herself the past few days. She just likes to sit in her favourite spot during the day and not always come out of the cage unless I bring her out on my finger, but then she doesn't like to stay out long.

I'll update probably tomorrow as our appt is later this afternoon. Thanks everyone.

ps- I keep the bottom of Basil's clean daily but to be honest I don't have a regular schedule for cleaning her toys and cage. I should really try better, but I do my best under my circumstances. I'll try to figure out a schedule that'll work with me. I appreciate all the advice.

Default Vet update

Hi everyone, Basil had a good visit with the vet last week. I explained Basil was doing a bit better but was having a few rough days. The vet explained that birds they suspect as having or have Avian Gastric Yeast (AGY) can 'wax and wane'. So she wasn't surprised to hear she had a few rough days. Basil had also been moulting and she explained when birds are moulting they may not be feeling their best. I didn't know that.

They didn't do any tests this time, partly because they have to be cautious about the expenses since the fund I get access to only has a certain amount of money alloted for each year. She told me to keep a close eye on Basil should she get any worse. She said if something comes up with Basil that I can just bring in fecal samples without having to bring Basil. !!

They are continuing her on the Potassium Benzonate and will check do some tests, I think just the fecal test in a couple weeks. I asked if Basil would need to be treated again in a period of time and she said once a bird is treated and cleared of AGY they don't need to be treated again. She wants me to keep trying to give her the probiotic pasted I was given. If Basil just won't take it, then she said it's ok. I think I'll definitely buy the probiotics you can order online.

The vet was happy with Basil's overall health. She gained a gram since our previous visit and she's so glad Basil has taken to eating the pellets. As usual Basil put on a show for the vet. It's really hilarious. This weekend she's started to be more herself and wanting to be with me ect.. I'll post a pic of her playing with a bird decoration I got for Christmas.

One thing I need to keep an eye on is that sometimes when Basil eats she starts moving her head as if she's about to throw-up... but then nothing happens. I mentioned it to the vet and she just said to keep an eye on her. I hope she's ok. I was hoping we were over with her having issues of throwing up by treating her for the AGY. I put a dish of pellets in her cage and she's eating from it. I'll have to do some reading about how to switch her over. I do remember what Faery Bee said about giving her seeds only for a time in the morning and late afternoon, while leaving the pellets and fresh fruit ect.. at all times.
Thank-you for reading this, and for those who are supporting Basil and I.

ps- I was talking with Basil earlier this morning and she said 'I love you' right when she had her face close to mine. It's sweet when she just randomly says it but even more so when she's talking right at me.

Basil is a beautiful little girl and I'm very glad to hear she is showing improvement.

It sounds as though you have developed a good relationship with your Avian Vet which is quite important when you have a budgie with a chronic condition.

I'm wishing you and Basil all the best and appreciate the update.

Tasha,

It's good to hear your little Basil is doing better and I'm so glad your avian vet is so knowledgable and helpful when it comes to Basil and her condition

I hope she continues to improve and that her condition is able to be controlled, if not cured completely.

Keep us updated on her illness and I'm praying she gets well soon!

Thank you for keeping us informed, we're all anxious to hear about your beautiful girl
