Default Budgie with liver problems, very sick

My budgie Squeakers has been sick since back in February. We took him to one vet after he exhibited some discharge around his eye and had him stay overnight for a few days, where they gave him antibiotics.

After we brought him back home it was obvious he wasn't getting better so we took him to an avian specialist and the vet said Squeakers had problems with his liver, and suggested giving him liquid milk thistle once a day. We've been trying this for the past few days, grabbing Squeakers which he clearly does not appreciate and trying to squirt the liquid into his beak.

Most of the time he doesn't open his beak so I've had to resort to squirting the liquid through the side when it's open partly, in an attempt to get it in him.

As of this evening he is incredibly weak. The poor budgie is very puffy, having severe coordination issues and very sleepy. He also spends much of his time on his food dish or on the bottom of his cage. I am not sure how much longer he has but the signs do not look positive. He is not old, being only around 3.

Does anyone have any recommendations for something different to try? Getting the liquid into him has been quite hit-or-miss. Tonight we tried squirting a bit of the milk thistle liquid onto the corn he enjoys chewing in an effort to get him to swallow some.

I'm very sorry to hear this.
It can be very tricky to medicate them. If you're having that much trouble, I would suggest asking your avian vet if Squeakers can be hospitalised as they will have special equipment to crop feed him his medicine or at least are more skilled at giving oral meds.

So sorry to hear of your budgies condition, he does sound very sick indeed. Keep him extra warm ,the stress from having to pick him up will not help him , you can place the liquid in his drinking water but usually they are not as sick as is your little fellow. I tend to agree with Niamhf a vet can give the medication via a crop needle.
I will keep him in my prayers,

I'm very sorry your little budgie is so ill. Grabbing him and trying to give him milk thistle orally has to be adding to his stress level.

I'd contact your Avian Vet about hospitalization for him and if that isn't feasible, then I'd suggest you try the Aloe Detox as discussed in this link.

I'm wishing all the best for your little one.
Sending lots of prayers.

I'm so sorry to hear Squeakers is so sick!

It sounds like he's not eating, and this will only make him weaker. Make sure he's drinking, too, and if not, you should make some of this Pedialyte as it contains valuable electrolytes that will keep his strength up. Soak some millet in this solution and offer it to him, you can replace his water with some of this mix, too.

Be sure he is kept warm and I would remove his perches except for maybe one at the bottom of the cage, you can put a towel at the bottom in case he falls. If you have a hot water bottle, you can wrap it up in a towel and place it at the bottom of the cage.

Right now, as the others have said, he really needs to see a vet, so I would try and find one close to you you can take him to, since it's an emergency.

I do hope your little one makes it, please keep us updated!

Thank you for all the support and advice!

Unfortunately little Squeakers passed this morning. I think it was sort of clear he didn't have much time left by the symptoms he was showing. We did what we could.

Farewell little Squeakers, I will always remember your trilling and singing.

I'm so sorry to hear of Squeaker's death

May he rest in peace over the Rainbow Bridge.

I'm going to close this thread now--if you'd like to post a memorial in the "In Memory" section, please feel free to do so
