Default Arthur Broke His Leg

I just had a bad accident trying to let my birds have out of cage time. I had opened the roof of Molly and Arthur's cage to let them out. The roof fell on him and feathers went everywhere and he took off. When he landed I saw he was favoring one leg and his foot was bent completely upward and it just looks bad.

I'm out my door on the way to the avian vet. He's in a travel cage with a blanket on top.

Is there anything I can do for the fifteen minute car ride to the vet?? I feel so so so horrible.

Edit: I am not driving, my mom is. I got lucky and she is on vacation while bad things happen.

Oh no, I'm so sorry for this accident...
If Arthur isn't bleeding, then cushioning the bottom of the cage, removing any dangling toys from the travel cage and covering the cage on three sides for the ride and while you are at the waiting room at the vet's is a good idea.
You can also turn car radio on low volume to hopefully help your boy settle during the ride. Talking to him can also have a soothing effect.
I'm praying for the very best outcome for your Arthur and I hope he heals up well.
Be sure to update us on your Arthur after the appointment.

Thank you, Aluz!

I just got done at the vet and Arthur broke his leg cleanly, so there are no fragments of bone hanging around. His bone is too small to put a pin in, so he is in a splint for four to six weeks. He's on a pain medication called Metacam for a week and I administer it twice a day. He also is living in a plastic container with padding for a few days until he gets used to moving around with his little splint. Then he's going to stay in the travel cage with everything down low until he heals up totally. He's also really ticked off at me because the vet clipped his wings so that he doesn't injure himself further trying to fly.

It was a tad funny after he got his xrays because the vet came in and was like "he is in breeding condition. His testicles are huge." I figured as much considering he was going after all of the ladies. Thanks again for all your help everyone! Can I give him his food and water in bottle caps? I don't have anything small enough to fit in his little container.

I feel so horribly guilty. The vet was telling me that accidents happen and all that mattered was that I took him for help. I still don't feel any less guilty.

I went to Kensington Bird and Animal hospital and I highly recommend them to anyone in the Connecticut area. They are so kind and helpful. I called them to let them know I was coming in and they had a doctor waiting on standby who took him back to be seen immediately.

Alyssa, I'm so sorry this accident happened! Aluz has given great advice on how to keep him comfortable during the vet ride.

I'm so glad everything went well and little Arthur is on the mend! You did wonderfully in getting him to the vet as quickly as possible so he could be treated. How funny he's extremely in breeding condition

I'm sure he'll learn to get around with his splint soon, and it'll be off before you both know it! In the meantime it sounds like you are well prepared to keep him as comfortable as possible during this time. Serving his food and water in bottle caps should work just fine

Thanks for the update, and try not to feel too bad. Accidents happen and the important part is that Arthur will be just fine

Oh no, how scary for both of you. Good thing you were able to get him to the vet right away. I hope he heals quickly.

Try not to feel guilty, your determination and fast action in terms of getting Arthur professional emergency attention have certainly made a big difference and your budgie boy now has the very best chances at a full recovery.
I'm glad the people at the animal hospital were so caring and attentive during the whole situation.

There is no problem whatsoever in giving food and water through bottle caps.

I'm sending my best wishes to you and Arthur.
