Default My budgie has a poorly eye?

Hi,
I'm new on here as I have just recently got 2 new budgies.

Their feathers are going a bit thin round their eyes which I am thinking are mites, but of them has a funny eye, like a red second eye lid............could anyone help what this might be?

He seems to be ok, he can open his eye, he flys around ok and is eating and drinking and making lots of noise.

Thanks
Michelle

Hi Michelle and welcome to the forums!

I do see what you mean by the swelling on the eyelid. The swelling could have been caused by an accident (night fright or flying accident).
While it's uncommon, another possibility is the result of a mosquito (or other small insect) bite. I have had this happen with my budgies in the past, mosquitoes can bite during the night when a pet bird is sleeping without having their heads tucked into the back feathers. The eyelid area is exposed when they are sleeping.

From that photo I'm not seeing any signs of mites. There are a few illnesses where one of the symptoms is swelling on the eyes. If the eye area on both of your budgies is not looking good, then it would be best to have them both thoroughly checked by an avian vet specialist, so that they are properly diagnosed and have the right treatment plan for their needs.

I'm wishing your budgie boy and his mate a steady and full recovery.

Hi there and to the forums!

What a handsome boy your budgie is! I agree with Aluz completely regarding his eyelid, and I hope it heals on his own!

If it seems to be bothering him, you can put a drop of sterile saline solution in his eye or a drop of unsweetened room-temperature chamomile tea to soothe the irritation.

As for the slight baldness around the eye, it looks like he's going through a light moult as I see some pin feathers around his eye

It's nothing to worry about and soon his feathers will be back to normal!

It's great to have you with us and we'd love to meet your other budgie, too, when you get a chance.

In the meantime, be sure to look at the Budgie Articles and browse through the Stickies (important threads "stuck" to the top of each subforum for easy reference) to ensure you're up to date on the best budgie care!

Hope to see you around!

Some good advice here. StarlingWings makes a good point on the pin feathers -- they tend to scratch around the head and eye areas with their sharp little raptor nails and may scratch themselves. They will also rub against things to scratch their heads and they are not always careful.

As Aluz mentioned, watch it, if it gets any worse for wear, you may need to make a trip to an avian vet and in the meantime, try the homeopathic remedies Starling mentions.

How often would i put Goldeneye on my budgies eye? i put it on last night and again this morning? how long would you give it before you started to notice a change?

It seemed to get better then over the weekend went all red again, hes made it worse by trying to itch it on his feeding dish.

Thanks
