Default Bloody Preening Gland

Samantha's mouth looked red earlier, and I didn't know if it was blood or radish stains, so I just kept an eye on her. She kept poking at her preen gland, and I finally got a good look. It's all bloody and it looks like it might have ruptured or something. I assume this is an emergency? I need to take her to the vet, right?

Yes Robyn, absolutely take her to the vet right away.

Let us know how she does.

They're closed. They open at 9 tomorrow. Should I try to do first aid? My parents aren't taking this seriously. What do I do? I don't know how much blood there is. She's so old. She's not in total distress or anything. This is serious, I know. She was upset yesterday evening and was trembling and hyperventilating. I thought she'd been startled by Alice, but maybe her gland was hurting. Can we wait until tomorrow to bring her in? I should have tried harder to see what was going on, then we could've taken her in. But I thought it might've just been some radish stains!

I think it ruptured. There's a small bloody "hole" above her tail with a "dark cap" near it. The dark cap looks like it was attached to/was her preen gland. She's trying to get the cap off, but the boys keep pecking her while she's trying to get it out from her feathers. There doesn't appear to be a lot of blood, but it's definitely an open wound. There isn't any blood dripping out of it and her feathers aren't stained with blood, so she should hopefully be able to wait till tomorrow to see the doctor. She might need a cone or something to stop her from picking at it.

Robyn,

You need to separate her from all the other birds. Put her in a small cage by herself. Keep her warm and give her electrolyte solution. If it is currently bleeding you need to stop of the blood flow because she can easily bleed to death.

Are there no emergency vets near you that you can take her to?

There are emergency vets, but at the slightest mention of the word "budgie", they just about hang up on me. Morris is the only one who deals with birds. Non-avian hospitals won't even check for parasites in bird poop. I understand they don't work with birds, but it isn't like I'm asking them to perform open heart surgery on a hummingbird!

When my parents get back, I'll get them to help me put her in the other cage. Her back definitely seems to be hurting her, but she's in pretty good spirits.

Well, then apparently you are going to need to separate her and monitor her very carefully until you can get her in tomorrow. Good luck, I hope she doesn't start bleeding badly.

Thanks, Deborah. I'm going to take her to see Dr. Morris first thing in the morning. Well, the animal hospital opens at 9:00, so fresh sprouts and water first, then a trip to the vet. I just hope she doesn't pick at her ouchie before she sees the doctor.

Tsk. My parents won't let me take her in because she's old and will die from the stress. They want me to wait until Monday before bringing her in. Okay, Mom! It isn't like she could develop an infection by then! I mean, it's not like she's been picking at it. The blood on her beak doesn't suggest that at all. I mean, she only has a bit of blood on her beak, but still.
