Unhappy foot care

I noticed my budgie has a small cut on the top of his foot. it is a bit swollen and he is not perching he is staying at the bottom of the cage. he has in the last few days climbed up to eat but he is not playing or interacting with his cage mate. what should i do?

Welcome to the forums!

I'm sorry your budgie hurt his foot and hasn't been feeling well.
Did you manage to take a closer look at the foot and to see if there is additional damage on the soles of the foot?
Even with one injured foot, your budgie would still be able to perch with the other foot and if he is spending so much time on the bottom of the cage, and you notice a change on his behaviour (decrease in energy levels, appetite), it would really be best to have your budgie seen by an avian vet specialist.

The avian vet will be able to take a proper look at the swollen foot as well as to check his overall health and to prescribe the most adequate treatment plan for your budgie.

Since your budgie is spending more time on the cage's bottom, you can cushion the cage with a soft cloth or old t-shirt. You can also pad a couple of perches with vet wrap.

I hope your budgie's foot will heal up well and he will feel better soon, best of luck!

Hi! to Talk Budgies

I agree with aluz. It is important you check the foot to see if there are additional sores.

Do you have perches of varying diameters in the cage?
A platform perch would be good for him to sit on while his foot
is hurting him.

If you are able to easily handle him, I would recommend making a cup of chamomile tea and bring it to room temperature.
You can put some of the tea in one of the water dishes in the cage.
Both budgies can drink it. It will not hurt either one of them.
Chamomile has a calming effect.

Additionally, I would soak his foot a couple times a day in room temperature chamomile tea which will help with both the pain and inflammation.

If the foot is not better in a day or so, I would definitely take him to an Avian Vet to see if the foot is infected.

Avian Vets have special training to determine the cause of symptoms resulting from illness or trauma. This is important as "regular" vets will often overlook symptoms that are quickly obvious to an Avian Vet.
When you rely on anyone who has not had training in Avian diagnosis and care, you may be delaying effective treatment. This can prolong suffering that may be avoidable.
The bird will often require a more intense, prolonged treatment with a poorer chance of full recovery than it would have if you seek prompt professional diagnosis and treatment at the first sign of illness.

Distinction between an Avian Vet and a Vet that "Will See Birds"

Default foot care

Hello everyone I called an avian vet and his advise was to indeed pad the bottom of the cage and keep budgie warm. My friend a fellow budgie lover told me about the tea. I put it in the water dish and they love it. I also soaked his foot in it several time through the night and I am tired at work today but it so worth it. there was no other foot injury on the bottom or the other foot. today Lefty is perching and playing and eating. I think he is much better. Thank you all for your prayers and kind thoughts.

It's great that you are already noticing an improvement on your budgie's foot. Hopefully soon it will be as good as new, thank you for the update!

Since your budgie is healing up well and there is not a sense of urgency, I'm moving this thread to the Follow-up Center section.

I'm so glad to hear he's doing better! It's so good to know that the tea really helped Lefty and that he's on his way to recovering fully

Great job!
