Exclamation Uh-oh! Ernie foaming at mouth

Well, Ernie caught some sort of....thing. And it's bad. He was acting 100% normal yesterday, then all of a sudden this morning he started choking and foaming at the mouth. I checked on him again recently and he stopped choking/foaming, but he's obviously sick. I'm going to take him to the vet tomorrow (since all of the vet clinics nearby are closed on Sundays); but I'm not entirely certain what I can do otherwise. I'm keeping him warm (I have his sheet that I cover his cage with at night plus a blanket partially over his cage) and I did some research on the Internet. This is clearly a very serious problem; and I don't know if there's a whole lot I can do for him outside of seeing what the vet can do. I know budgies are unfortunately good at concealing illness and that's probably what he's been doing... One website said you should try to examine the budgie and his beak, but I doubt that would work because Ernie HATES being handled and the stress might just make him worse. I don't have what is reffered to as a "hospital cage" to transfer him to.
Do you guys have any suggestions to give as to at least make him more comfortable? Thank you for any advice you can give me!

Keep Ernie warm.
Put a millet spray soaked in Guardian Angel/Pedialyte in his cage and also use that same solution for his drinking water.

You need to go out and get a small travel/hospital cage today.
Every home with a budgie should always have one on hand.

Have you tried contacting an Emergency Vet Clinic in your area?
Ernie needs to be seen sooner rather than later if he is going to survive.

As a last resort, contact an on-line vet for assistance.

I am so sorry to hear about Ernie. I hope he feels better soon and that the vet can help. Until someone with more experience weighs in, the best advice I can give is to provide some Guardian Angel for your budgie. https://www.talkbudgies.com/your-budg...te-recipe.html

I do think it is good that you are keeping him warm enough and minimizing drafts.

Sending good vibes your way.

Thank you all so much for your advice! @FaeryBee I don't think I have an Emergency Vet Clinic in my area, as far as I know there are only a few regular clinics nearby and they're all closed.
I made the Pedialyte solution as suggested, and I have good news- when I replaced his water feeder that was filled with the solution, he immediately drank some of it. He didn't gag when he drank, so hopefully that's a good sign. I'm really glad I was able to get him to drink some fluids. When I had offered him plain water previously, he wouldn't drink it.

Update: Right now, Ernie's just sitting in the corner of his cage all puffed up. I think he might go to sleep (which is probably a good thing considering how tired he probably is!). Poor little guy, he looks exhausted. No foaming/gagging as of late.

Another update: I put a heating pad on his cage (turned on the lowest setting). Ernie drank some more of the solution.

Checked on Ernie this morning; he seems to be doing fine. Hopefully he had a restful night; I don't think he's had any more foaming.

Very, VERY good news, everyone: Ernie is acting almost normal. This morning he's been climbing all over his cage and now he's eating some seed. He's very alert and awake, like nothing happened. Of course, I'm still taking him to the vet since he still definitely needs to be checked out. But this is incredibly encouraging! This tough little guy may very well pull through!

More very encouraging news! Ernie's made such a strong recovery that the vet recommended over the phone that we keep him home and monitor his activity closely; since the stress of traveling could make Ernie feel sick again. Ernie's chirped a few times after being silent all day yesterday. He's still very active; climbing all over the cage and whatnot. So, right now, it looks like he's making a surprisingly speedy recovery! YAY!

I've watched him closely this morning, and it appears as though Ernie has made a full recovery! He's chirping, preening, eating, and drinking like normal; and already spilled almost all of his Pediolyte once in an effort to get my attention.
[I must say he's gone to drastic measures to get my attention: he started flapping around and ended up at the bottom of the cage. I lifted him (I'm surprised he didn't bite me) back onto his perch, and a minute or two later he preened himself like nothing happened. What a drama queen.]
His droppings are still watery, but considering he's just now recovered I'm not terribly concerned. If the watery droppings persist for several days I'll probably take him to the vet just to be on the safe side.
But he made the recovery! I was so worried he wouldn't make it!
