Fast deterioration in Ollie

As I'm typing this, Ollie is sitting on my chest, breathing. About half an hour ago he was on the bottom dowel perch of their cage, which I thought was very odd since he's never there. He was only there for about 20 minutes before I noticed him on the floor of the cage. He can't fly right now. He can barely walk/move around.

Early this morning I knew something was wrong by how he was looking at me through the cage bars with his foot on the bar. I wrote in the follow up centre thread that I noticed a lump in his abdomen and had planned on taking him to the vet this week.

I don't know why he is deteriorating so fast, all I can do is talk to him and give him cheek rubs. My heart is breaking for him.

Not even 10 minutes after posting this Ollie passed away.
He was on my chest for around 20-25minutes before he took his last breath.

Right before he passed his eyes widened really wide and his wings opened, and his head/neck seemed to stiffen to the side, then his wings closed. He took 3 or 4 gulps of air then he just stiffened and passed away. I have no idea what to do. I am still holding him in my top on my chest.

When I was holding him I brought him close to the cage to see Daisy. She was chirping and he gave his last chirp. When he passed I held him close again so she could see him. She was completely quiet and just looking at him, inspecting him.

I don't know what to do. I still want to take him to the vet so she can inspect the lump, the little tags on his neck. So I know why he died. But I don't know what to do until then. I don't want him in the cage, what if Daisy pecks at him? But I can't stand to see him in there like this anyway. How can she say goodbye, does she need to have time with him like this so she can have closure?

Oh Bee, I’m so sorry to hear this

Personally I wouldn’t put him in the cage with her, though you could possibly lie him beside the cage for a short while, so that she can see him lying still.

The practicalities- If you do want a necropsy and can’t contact your vet for advice on what to do with Ollie’s body in the meantime, then I suggest that you find a lidded plastic container to place him in, and to place that in your refrigerator to keep cool and slow down any decay.

Big hugs to you all, you did what you could to try to help him and he had you to comfort him in his last moments. Fly high little Ollie

Bee,

I'm very sorry for your loss of little Ollie.
I know how very difficult this is.

The only way to know what was wrong with Ollie is to have the vet perform a necropsy.

With regard to Daisy, she does not need to see Ollie anymore. Just take him and place him on a soft cloth in a box in the refrigerator until you decide whether to take him into the vet.

I'm closing this thread. If you want to make a tribute or memorial post for Ollie later on, you may do so in the "In Memory" section of the forum.

Blessings
