Who out there has other birds in their flock besides the budgies? Do the different birds interact well? Play together?
We currently have 2 sweet budgie girls. I'm pretty sure they think they own the place. They are really comfy roaming the living room all day (this is where their cage is kept). When we are home they spend a large part of the day outside their cage and we like it that way. We are thinking of adding a cockatiel to the family and I wonder if they would ever be able to interact safely with one another. Also, I wonder if it would be ok if their cages were side by side because that is really the only option of placement.
Hi, I have English budgies, Cockatiels and an African Love bird .
I keep them all in the same Bird room.. I have 6 ft tall and five ft wide cages.
I do let the African love bird Skittles, ( male) and one of my male Cockatiels Teaka , out of their cages at the same time.. but the E. Budgies have their own Play and exercise time when the others go back in their cages..
Budgies, Romeo and Juliet , Samson and Delilah enjoy being out together but I have to watch Budgies Gracie and Simon and Keanu and Bella those two pairs love to aggravate the Cockatiels....
Two of my Cockatiels Kiwi and Teaka are sitting on eggs... and I am so hoping that this clutch will make it ! Kiwi had one other clutch and only one baby out of 4 hatched ..... they fed it for a few days and then stopped feeding it... I could only assume something was wrong with the baby.. It looked totally normal but I never heard a single peep out of it.. such heartbreak . for me... but mom and Dad knows best...They are faithful to this clutch and take very few breaks away from their eggs.. when Kiwi comes out Teaka stays in and when Teaka comes out Kiwi stays in.. lol They are protectors for sure !
My bird Room is large and I have a screen door and a regular door at the entrance to this room... So they are free to fly around and play . My husband and I built two play lands for the birds.. and we have several large perches throughout the room for them ..
I have two cockatiels and one English budgie right now. They seem to be fine together. I used to have four American budgies (they are smaller and tend to be a bit more hyper than English), and they also got on well with the cockatiels, although they did annoy them to a point. I kept them in separate cages and separate rooms, but they did have playtime together.
I think it all depends on the bird. You will just have to wait and see. Cockatiels are very docile though.
In have four budgies and two parrotlets. The parrotlets get along well with each other and so do the budgies. But they don't mix well aside from their own species. I do hear that cockatiels and budgies get along quite well.

Owned by & slave to: Oliver & Gemma the parrotlets, Fee the green cheek conure, & the budgie crew. RIP Mina the linnie.
I house my 9 budgies with 4 cockatiels in a large flight cage . They all seem to get along really well apart from the occasional squabbles over a favourite perch.
Both species generally keep to themselves with minimal interaction . They do eat and roost together at night . At times , the 2 cockatiel males will sing/'talk' to the budgie males . My budgie females are quite indifferent to both the tiels as well as the males preferring to be by themselves .
I feel you can have both in the same household. It all comes down to the individual personalities of your birds. You could end up with extremely friendly birds or indifferent ones like mine . Generally budgies and tiels aren't overly aggressive to each other but its always better to introduce them slowly on neutral ground.
I have a white faced grey cockatiel who lives in a cage in the same bird room that my budgies roam freely in. He get's out of cage time with them and him and my budgie Solomon seem to have a bit of an interest in each other...I think you will enjoy a cockatiel, and I would recommend getting a young hand tamed one....
