Default do you think its safe for gerbils & budgie to interact

im going to get two gerbils soon. they will kept in same room as my budgie (my budgie is out of her cage all day except when im out)

Ill need to get the gerbils out quite a lot to play and obviously I wont leave the bird and gerbils unattended

but im concerned that my budgie will bite my gerbils or the gerbil biting the bird

Ive read that gerbils arent aggressive and I dont think budgies are either

what do you think? id love to hear from people who already own budgies and gerbils

p.s.can gerbils pass any diseases onto budgies

Oh, my, you opened up my favorite topic
I have two gerbils right now, and I used to have five!! They are so much fun-you're gonna love them
Ok, I don't know how budgies usually do around gerbils, but I can tell you that my cockatiels are just fine with them. I take Creampuff and Fudge (my two gerbil boys) out of the cage every day for about thirty minutes or so. I usually spread a blanket on the couch and give them some boxes and things to do. They love running around and eating treats. My cockatiels (who are free to fly around the house all day) do not bother them. Tony (my male tiel) is always curious about them and will perch on their bin and watch them play. One time he landed on the couch because he saw them eating, and Fudge came to him a little too close so Tony got spooked and flew off.
Now, I would not encourage your budgie to mingle with the gerbils. The gerbils can bite his toes. However, you can always supervise them while they are all out. Your gerbils will live in their tank or bin anyway, so all should be well.
I don't know of a disease that could be spread from one species to another. My gerbils have been pretty healthy though. You just have to make sure you clean them regularly and check for any kind of illness signs, just like with any other pets.

Oh, and whoever told you that gerbils aren't aggressive - that is not always true.
Gerbils sometimes de-clan. For example, if you get three gerbils as babies, they may live in harmony for a while, but perhaps in a year or two when they mature, they may start having territorial problems. This happened to my three girls - three sisters. After two years, two of them started fighting, and I mean jumping at each other's throats. I had to separate them into different bins.
So, even though gerbils can be very gentle and friendly towards their human, be aware that they can also display aggressiveness towards each other or other animals. I would definitely not let the budgie play with them, just as a precaution.

Gerbils can be very aggressive and can bite quite hard if they want to.

PLEASE be very vigilant in your supervision of your budgie when the gerbils are out. Many budgies are quite inquisitive and you definitely will not want to risk the gerbils injuring your bird.

eduardo --- thanks for all your advice. could you giv me your opinion on these two cages?

Extra Large Gerbilarium | Pets At Home

or

Small Animal Habitat X-large 3 Shelf

there isn't much difference in sizes but im unsure wich is better. the 1st link is better as it has a deep base for digging tunnels but on the other hand it has bars which id like to ovoid because I dont want to risk the chance of them bar chewing as it drives me crazy

the 2nd link seems good but as it has shelfs it means the base layer wont be very deep for tunnelling. my local pets at home store said glass tanks are not suitable and told me theyneed deep bases for tunnelling

can you give your opinion on the better option? also are these cages both big enough for 2 gerbils?

thanks so much. id really appreciate your help on this. im so confused

most gerbils seem very gentle if they are treated right. but yeah I wouldn't want my budgie getting bitten. I will be very careful when they are out

I have never been bitten by my gerbils out of their aggressiveness. My boys were a little curious about my hand when I first got them and merely nibbled on my fingers.
With frequent, gentle handling and lots of treats out of your hand, they should develop a good relationship with you. Mine are pretty comfortable with me handling them, to the point that Fudge will sit in my hand and eat an almond.
You just have to know how to tame them from the beginning.
They are very patient even with my son, who is ten, and seem to tolerate his holding them and petting them.
Unlike hamsters, who are known to be more grumpy, lol
