Default Hermes is fixated on the new budgies, what should I do?

I posted some photos that show Hermes kissing and feeding my other budgies. At first this was cute and funny but not anymore.

He doesn't play with his toys or just sit and sing like he used to. When I let all four out to play, he runs after Casper and Miss Coco constantly. It's like an obsession. The worst part is that he ignores Lady Anne, his cagemate. Then when it's time to go back into their respective cages, he watches them through the bars.

I started the new pair in a separate cage as quarantine at first. Now it's because Lady Anne fights with both of them when they're all inside one cage.

Can you give me advice? It's been only 6 weeks since I adopted Casper and Miss Coco. Should I separate the two cages in different rooms? But won't they call to each other and go crazy?

Should I give away the new pair? Will Hermes recover or be traumatized? I just want my old Hermes back. Thanks for any suggestions.

Well, these social little flock bird's will alway's prefer the company of other budgies over us if given that choice. If you want a close bond with him, you will have to work extra hard and limit his exposure to other bird's...

Patricia,

I would try separating the cages into different rooms, give it a couple of weeks and see if Hermes regains his interest in his toys and Lady Anne. If Lady Anne fights with the new birds when they are all in the same cage housing the four of them together isn't going to be an option.

My bad....I just realized I misread your first post. It is the bond with his cagemate that you are talking about. You can do like Deb suggested and see how that works out....

Dynamics often change quite a bit when you add a new bird/birds to the existing flock, as you have learned from your situation.
How bad is Lady Anne fighting the new birds? How big is the new cage where all of them are supposed to live?
If the fighting and Hermes's obsession persists, I would rehome the new couple. Sometimes, things just don't work out.

Deb,

I tried this on Saturday, each cage in a different room. When I let Hermes and Lady Anne out for flying time, Hermes kept circling the room where the new budgies were calling to him (from inside their cage). I'll give it two weeks as you suggested and see what happens. Thank you.
