About 4 days ago we bought home two baby budgies (8 weeks) a male Mo and female Maggie. From the outset Mo has been very tame, will happily ride around on my shoulder, my son plays with him and never bites. Maggie, on the other hand is very wary of any hand entering the cage, and if I am able to gently get hold of her she bites down HARD on my hand, so I have left her in the cage for now hoping to gain her trust. I have been placing my hand in the cage for a few minutes at a time getting her used to me... Is there anything else I should be doing to help her be calmer? She is very alert all day and pesters Mo quite a bit when he's napping in the day (sounds familiar!).
Any tips would be appreciated!
Hello and welcome to TB, when you first bring home your birds they are as frightened of you as you are of making a mistake. Some birds adjust sooner and more easily than others.
Don't be surprised if your baby boy makes a backwards move regarding his allowing you to touch him. This often happens once the initial fright wears off.
For now sit near the cage and talk to them, sing hum any sound!!
When you go out leave a radio or tv on for them silence is a sign of danger to these guys. Cover the cage on three sides this helps them feel safer and more calm.
Welcome to the forums! You will find all you need to know on budgie care here. Be sure to take a look at the stickies over at the Training and Bonding section of the forums for the valuable info and tips on how to tame your budgies.
It's best to let your budgies first get used to their new surroundings and let them settle and taking slow steps in terms of gaining their trust in you, as opposed to a more hands on approach.
Good luck and feel free to post some pics of Mo and Maggie once they are more settled.
RIP sweet Tito (Summer 2008 - January 17th 2013).
You are missed and never will be forgotten.
Sitting next to the cage and talking, singing and/or reading to Maggie will help her get used to your presence so she learns to trust you. Resting your hand in her cage while doing so gives her the opportunity to learn that your hand isn't a thread and won't hurt her.
