Default Bossy and jealous budgie

Hello everyone,

I'm having a small problem with one of my two budgies and I was wondering if you could offer me some advice.

Pufi, a 5 month old female is being very bossy towards the male (Kiwi - 3.5 years old - he can't fly unfortunately, so he's an easy target).

She chases him away from the food and water, from the entire cage actually, she chases him around many times a day and many times when that happens Kiwi takes refuge in a somewhat isolated perch on a small tree branch outside the cage (where he can defend better from Pufi). When Kiwi is eating and she doesn't feel like chasing him away directly, she starts screaming loudly and jumping very actively from branch to branch, either to annoy him or to signal danger, so that he will leave the food and run outside the cage to the "safe branch".

We can somewhat understand the fact that she wants to own the cage, because the cage in which they stay now is the cage we kept her during the quarantine. We didn't force Kiwi inside her cage though, we simply put the 2 cages together next to each other and Kiwi eventually moved in. We then moved his food bowl in her cage and removed hers (as she began to ignore it completely and only it from the new bowl).

What we noticed is that she's very jealous too. When we give attention to Kiwi, or when he sings to us, Pufi starts singing louder or screaming, or she tries to position herself between Kiwi and us to get all the attention.

It's not all bad, they are sometimes close and there are days in which they preen each other quite a lot and most of the times they sleep one next to eachother (Kiwi follows Pufi to sleep near her most of the times).

We keep their cage at about half a meter from my desk and both me and my girlfriend are home for most of the day, so we are practically always around them.

The situation seems to improve during the days in which we interact with her more (especially while we hand feed them with millet spray or fruit), but as soon as we don't give her that much attention the situation gets worse.

Do you have any advice on what can we do to improve the situation?

PS: sorry for the very long post. I just wanted to describe the situation thoroughly.

I would suggest you keep multiple food and water dishes available in the cage so Kiwi can move to a different dish if Puffin chases him away from one of them.

I'd also recommend setting up the second cage again and give Kiwi the option of moving back out if that's what he'd like to do.

At least by having the cage there for him he'll have someplace of his own to retreat to if Puffin gets too aggressive.

Thank you FaeryBee for the suggestions. I will move his food and water dishes inside his cage and bring back Pufi's initial dishes to her cage.

Kiwi's cage is still next to hers, open at all times, but he doesn't go in at all anymore.

Good luck -- let us know how things work out.
