Default Zinc Poisoning?

How does zinc poisoning occur, exactly? Like, how does a budgie "ingest" zinc? I attached some toys to my budgies' cages with these metal clips that I found on some toys, however I don't know if they're zinc or not. I'm going to buy some stainless steel clips tomorrow afternoon. Is it okay to keep the clips in until then? I know zinc is very dangerous, but I doubt the kids will lick or nibble on the clips for more than a few seconds. If I need to take the clips out, I'll do it tomorrow when I get up since they've been sleeping for almost half an hour now.

Unfortunately these toys that our birds love so much are quite often made with zink oxides. We can only arm ourselves with as much knowledge as possible and make the conscious decision to monitor the use of bells, and clips and other toys. Paint in another culprit, unfortunately these little guys love to nibble and bite which is part of their make up we as their humans have the job of worrying and acting ! The clips will be fine over night and well done for taking action, I as you would rather be safe than sorry. It is for this reason I replace toys with bells regularly.

Robyn,

Thank you for being conscientious about your budgies.

Like Cathy, I frequently check any metal my birds have contact with.

Heavy metal poisoning is very serious and can occur when a budgie licks or nibbles on toys, cages, clips, etc that contain toxic metal. It's good that you will be replacing the clips with ones you are sure are made of stainless steel.
Toys often have bells that are not made from stainless steel so please be sure to keep a close eye on those as well.

Okay, good to know! I'll be buying ten stainless steel clips tomorrow. That's going to put me back $30 or $40. I've been recordkeeping for my dad so I can make enough money to buy the kids Arcadia bulbs for the cage I ordered, but I keep spending it all on other things for them!

Thank you for asking this question... I hadn't even considered worrying about this.. Seems like you've gotten some helpful responses and I'll be checking my 'stuff' in the morning as well.

Hi there! My own Sammy had heavy metals poisoning from toy bells and the metal clips used to secure toys to the cage last December. He appeared very ill, and the vet did an x-ray, revealing little specks of bright content (metal) in his crop and intestine. Over the following months, it has slowly worked its way out of his system, and we gave him treatments for it whenever it made him sick.

For this reason, we don't give him anything with metal that isn't stainless steel. All of his toys and perches are plastic, wooden, paper, or leather. He has one cotton perch outside of his cage that he likes, but since he's a chewer, he doesn't get to play with it unsupervised.

I ordered 4 sets of stainless steel dishes on zooplus.es (they have sites in other countries) and they were very reasonable and the perfect size for Sammy.

Good luck!

Thanks guys . Glad to hear your little guy is better now, Bethany. I bought another stainless steel dish last week (now I have two stainless steel dishes) that I'm going to use as a bath, place to forage, and as a "toy box". It's nice and big since it's a macaw dish. I'm super paranoid about everything I give my guys, so I'm super careful. Although we did have that incident with the "flying carrot" just today. I've already taken most of the bells off of their toys and I had to cut a lot of the toys off of their play stand (they haven't used it yet).

I was going to use muriatic acid to test the clips for zinc, but Dad used the last of it in the summer. So, if you guys want to test for zinc, use muriatic acid.
