It's simply a "myth" perpetuated by well-meaning but ignorant people who tell say "Only male budgies can talk"

Female budgies can most definitely speak!

(And now you have a female that can prove it. )

oh wow, i was so convinced that they couldnt talk because everyone told me that they couldnt, including breeders, so i never tried to teach her,

imagine my shock while im sitting on the couch one night and hear ''Jessie'' out of no where

if i manage to get her to say it on camera ill upload it and show you. everytime i get the camera out though, she stops talking

She'll be camera shy for the first little while, but once she knows your camera won't eat her, she'll hopefully loosen up.
Now that you know she'll chat, are you going to try and teach her any phrases? My Sweetie says his name too, but my husband taught him 'Don't care, wanna party!' which is quite hilarious to hear at random, haha

well before i knew she could talk, there are two phrases i use a lot to greet her, its either ''Jessieeee' in an excited i missed you tone, or its ''baby bird''

now that i know she can talk ill try to get her to say other things too

there has been a few times where shes made noises as if shes trying to say things but they are hard to make out as to what the words are that shes saying

the only clear word so far is Jessie

Here is another talking girl to inspire Jessie

I think talking females are unusual enough that it's understandable that some people, even breeders, believe they're not able to talk at all.

There aren't a whole lot of talking females on YouTube, and I've seen videos where the 'female' bird is clearly a male with a colour mutation that gives a pink rather than blue cere. Blue=boy is another 'rule' that doesn't always hold true.

If you think about it from an evolutionary standpoint, and how the sexes evolved to behave, male budgies need to show off to win a mate, and mimicry is part of showing off. They will imitate the female's sounds to impress her, and throw in whatever other noises are interesting to them.

Females on the other hand can sit there and let the males fight over them, and the rest of their interaction is mostly bossing other birds around and defending a good nest site. None of this really motivates mimicry. It just comes more naturally to males.

Get that video up! The internet needs more talking hens!

lol I've seen that video before. my budgie is definitely female though, she has a brown cere, she mimics a lot of things, for example, the noise my phone makes when i lock it, the r2d2 robot sounds, and her name and just yesterday she started saying ''baby bird''

i have been trying to get a video of her doing it, ill post it on this post when i get it
