Default Budgie hides?

Hi
my lovely female budgie likes to hide in the food dish and just sit there...sometimes she eats from there while she sits.
she looks sad why is that?

Hi Karina,

Is this recent behaviour? Also is she generally timid? (Perhaps she feels safe and secure in her dish)

How old is she and is she currently in breeding condition (cere turned dark brown in colour)?

Young budgie chicks during weaning age will often choose the food dishes to lie down on and take short naps during their little escapades out of the nest. Even after weaning and being fully independent they will at times reminisce on their younger days and use the food dish on the same manner, they usually outgrow the behaviour when they are about to reach 3 months old.

One of the other reasons for budgies to do this, especially mature females would be for nesting purposes. They kick out the food out of the dish and sit there.
In order to prevent your budgie to get broody and in egg laying mood, you can switch the food dishes and place different ones that have a top with just the opening for their heads to fit in. By using these dishes, she will be unable to get inside and lie on them. The fact that she is trying to hide may very well mean she is thinking about laying eggs, so if you don't want that to happen, do not give anything that she could potentially use as a nest.

You're very welcome and good luck on finding good food dishes with a small opening for the head.
