Wink Two new arrivals!

Hello everyone...here's hoping the picture works..
Meet Toad (blue boy) and Rosalina (green girl)!

This website is a godsend and it's also freaking me out and making me worry about budgerigar disease and feather dust and if my budgies are sick or just nervous from adjusting, they've only been home 3 days.

I will definitely be spending a lot more of my time here and any advice or criticism is welcome!

Hi and welcome to TB! Your birds are cute. I think they are just nervous because of their new surroundings. Your have them only for three days,so it's normal that they are nervous. Just be patient.

Congratulations on your gorgeous new couple!
By looking at them from that photo, they appear to be in very good shape health wise. Try not to be overly concerned about them.
By the way, I love your boy's name!

What a striking pair! I love the names, too, though I now have the Mario theme music running through my head, which means it will be there for at least a week. I totally know what you mean about all the worries that come with your first budgies (I panicked every time one of them would puff up a little to take a nap — OMG, sick budgies fluff their feathers and look lethargic!!!), but for now try to focus on deep breaths, calm, and happiness with your new companions. I'm glad you're here. Such a helpful, knowledgeable bunch of people around these parts! Welcome to the community.

Thanks for the replies everyone! Haha yes we have a dog named Bowser too so the Mario theme is going strong in our family. Yea definitely trying to keep calm. Unfortunately I am a chronic worrier, I've got the forehead creases to prove it hah.

As for the trouble makers the switch to pellets is not going so well... Haha Rosie is flicking them all over the place trying to get to her precious seeds.

I agree with the others. Your kids are probably just stressed out. I'm a chronic worrier too, so nothing to feel bad about. Actually, my doctor calls it anxiety disorder . Even when you get used to looking after your budgies, you'll still be posting frantically on here every few months about something being wrong with one of your kids. Maybe that's just me. My budgies often do things just to stress me out. Like when Samantha gave herself a black eye a couple of weeks ago. When I think back on it, it was kind of funny.

I'm glad to see you don't only have dowel perches in with them. It is very important to have a variety of perches of various shapes, sizes, and materials. This ensures that their feet stay in good shape and their nails don't become overgrown. Dowel perches aren't the proper diameter for happy feet. Often, people will just have a puny cage with a couple of dowel perches, a thing of cuttlebone, a seed dish, a water bowl, and maybe two toys. Obviously, you don't want to do that. Somehow, their instinct for survival outweighs their desire to end it all. Not a good life at all.

So, what are the dimensions of your cage? I'm sure everyone's dying to know . And about that toy you have in with them. You'll want to be careful with it. It has strings on it, and apparently little budgies sometimes eat them and their crop gets impacted, which isn't a good thing. If you're concerned, just snip all the loose strings off. I've never personally had an issue with my budgies eating string, but the more you know, eh?

It's also important to have a variety of toys. Two of my favourite companies are Planet Pleasures and Polly's. Both companies make safe, Robyn-approved parrot products that are made of natural materials. A good site to buy budgie stuff from is mysafebirdstore.com. All the products sold on the site are safe.

What pellets are you converting them to?

Wonder when FaeryBee is going to post her list of links for you to read.

Here I am with the magickal links Robyn was referring to.

Hi and to Talk Budgies!

Toad and Rosalina are adorable little budgies.

Budgies are often submissive for a few days because they're terrified.

To build your budgieís trust, sit by his cage and read, talk or sing quietly to him for a period of at least 10-15 minutes, 3 or 4 times day. After the 2nd or 3rd day, rest your hand on the outside of the cage when you talk to him so he'll learn that your hand is safe and will not hurt him.

After a week, rest your hand inside the cage when you talk.
Donít make sudden moves, donít try to touch him.
Let him get used to the idea that the hand is now in his safe place and not harming him.
After 2 weeks, begin moving your hand slowly toward the budgie and begin your taming and bonding sessions.

With regard to pellets, it can take quite a while to get budgies to accept them. You might want to take a look at this link for ideas on a great budgie diet:
