It's only recently my little budgie has discovered the bathtub. She suddenly started playing with her drinking water, putting her entire head in. I've tried filling her bathtub so many times, but she's always ignored it, and then suddenly two weeks ago she walked around to it and jumped in!
Since then, she's had many baths. She seems to love splashing the water everywhere, and she's having fun.
But why did she ignore the bath for the first 6 months of her life? What's "normal"?
She doesn't have a bathtub in the cage, as I'm a bit nervous about that... but she's out most of the time, and it's right by her playground, so it's not that she wouldn't have see it.
She's so CUTE in her little tub!
She may have just discovered that water can be used for things other than drinking somewhere along the way and not made the connection between "water" and "fun" before that.
I've also made the experience that it's easier for birds in general to start out with a flatter thing filled with water that they can "walk into" rather than having to jump right in. They're bad at judging how deep something really is. (My first budgie, who liked to bathe, once ended up jumping right into the fish tank...)
When it comes to bathing, the behaviour exhibited depends on the budgie itself, there is not a norm regarding a set time that takes for a budgie to become interested in the birdie bathtub and really use it. Nor is there a norm regarding how often they take these baths.
Some budgies never use a birdie bathtub, while others can take months or even years to first use one.
It all depends on the budgie's preferences and level of curiosity.
Some budgies would rather take baths on wet leafy greens while others love to wash their faces, little heads and chest on the water container.
There are also budgies that like being misted with a spray bottle and others that make good use of the birdie bathtubs.
It's great that your budgie girl has decided to try out her bathtub and is enjoying her baths! :)
@AlterEgon - the remark about the fish tank made me giggle. Hope the budgie didn't get scared of water from that incident! Good point about a more shallow tub. I should have thought of that.
@Aluz - good to know there isn't a "normal" here. Time shall tell what my little explorer decides to try out next :)
Scared of water? My Rinaldo? NEVER! I think we people got a lot more scared from the fish tank thing that he did. I used to joke that he had some identity problem and believed he was a duck or something. He once (years after the fish tank incident) watched my flatmate put water in the bathtub for ... I don't remember what, she was washing something. He watched from the edge of the tub and then jumped right in, chirping heavily. She (my flatmate) got quite a shock from that!
Thank you for sharing such an adorable picture! :)
