Default One More Try w/ Better Pictures 4//2?

It finally stopped raining, so I took this little one outside in a travel cage for pictures with my good camera, no flash. I thought male, then the last pictures made everyone, me included, think female. What do we think now?? Baby is 4 1/2 weeks and a mauve DF YF II.

ETA: So funny. This one always looks like a male to me in person. But then when I do these photos I see female. LOL They sure are easier when they get a little bit older. I'm pretty decent once they are 8 weeks or so as long as there isn't still excess melanin.

Okay, he's a tough one, but I say male. I think on here people will probably say both, but I think the little one is male because the cere is kinda mottled blue and pink instead of light blue and white.
Honestly, though, I might be wrong.
But I'm going with male!
He is gorgeous! Nice job, Legolas and Malina!

Thanks Starling! If nothing else it makes me feel better that I'm not the only one having trouble with this one! Funny thing is I don't see the blue in person. But then my eyes aren't the best and the pictures are enlarged.

I've got three nailed down, and the rest are too young or have too much melanin, but this one is driving me batty! I really just want to know on all of them so I can firm up who is staying and who I'll be placing elsewhere!

Yeah, I agree, these things can be frustrating! Mallorn was a hard one, she was a "he" for almost a month until her cere turned brown

Looking at the pics again, I hold even more strongly to male. The underlying color of the cere is pinkish-purple, so I think that would give it away.

Wow -- this IS a hard one.

In the pictures I see the mottled blue/pink StarlingWings described BUT -- I also see white around the nares.

I going to say Female.

Hopefully Lindsey will be by to give us the answer.

I ALWAYS trust Lindsey's knowledge and experience on matters of gender (and mutations and breeding and diet....)

I think female as well. I see a creme color around the nostrils.

Just a hunch but I think the double dark factor (mauve) is causing the cere to be darker than what one would expect on a young female? I know certain mutations can have an effect on the babies cere (like cinnamon) so I'm wondering if dark factors can do the same.

That's the one thing that made me unsure, I see the white around the nares also.
Why don't male budgies have bright red ceres and females have bright green, it would be easier

Hehe told you people would also say female, I agree with everything that's been said although I've seen budgies like this one end up being male.

Give him/her another week maybe?

Dark factors and yellowface mutations have nothing to do with cere color
