Default Is bread harmful to our feathered friends?

Bonnie came and sat on my hand today, first time ever while I was eating a sandwich and he promptly decided he wanted some as well. I held a bit of bread in my fingers, it had nothing on it and was a homemade wholemeal bread, and he pecked at it and seemed to enjoy it. But my worry is, is it harmful to him? He did't seem to eat a lot, dropped most of it over me if the truth be told but I want reassurance, although how I would stop this new habit of his would be quite a hard task as he is very persistant, also I don't want to lose this new friendship of ours.

I'm sure your bird enjoyed that little treat, and it won't harm him. Store bought bread's can be high in sugar, so you don't want to give them too much....check this out...

Yeah, breads fine especially homemade bread. I've made birdie bread before, although they didn't eat it. The base I used was:

3 eggs (including shells)
1 tsp cayenne pepper
1 cup (sprouted) brown rice flour
1/2 cup quinoa
1 cup (sprouted) brown rice
1/2 cup oats

You can also put sprouted grains, legumes, and seeds in it. Also, you should include a ton of different veggies such as peppers, sweet potato, corn, peas, carrot, broccoli, spinach, etc. Birdie bread can be one of the most nutritious and healthiest foods you can offer your budgie. Also, if you use a recipe that calls for milk or water, you can use budgie-safe tea instead. Such as homemade ginger root, dandelion root, alfalfa, and cinnamon tea.

A bite or two of bread, particularly wholemeal, won't harm your budgie. You only want to avoid breads that have certain things baked into them, like onions and garlic (if you had Italian bread, for example).

You might want to try feeding a handful of oats to see if he likes those as well. My Sammy also loves to peck at one flake of my wholegrain cereal before I add the milk (I take it out of the bowl and leave it for him in his play area).

Mally loves bread, she especially likes the little crunchy bits that are the crust. I only eat "fresh baked" breads and before I let her have anything, I always make sure there are only a few ingredients which are safe

Looks like you and Bonnie have come a long way, congrats!

Smile Is bread

We include whole grain bread as part of the soft food we give our crew. We also use pieces of crust with seeds on it as treats that can be shared after dinner or during training sessions. A number of our hand trained birds will at least take a taste of safe people food. Awhile ago someone posted asking what to do as they were out of money and did not have food for their budgie. It really started me thinking about what we had in the kitchen that would work in an emergency and then started introducing water crackers, plain multigrain cereals, bread crusts plain cooked grains, vegetable pasta and expanded the possible veggies that would be suitable in emergencies. In fact There are a lot of possible cross overs.

We have flock leaders in each flight. These are the risk takers that sample new toys or food before the rest of the flock takes the plunge. It is funny to see every one circle up and watch the leader check things out and then go to town. It is a real lesson in social dynamics of budgies. When I have several birds out with me for training the same applies. Our Apollo is the house bird leader. What he eats the others will at least try. As long as we
we avoid processed sugar and preservatives we have lots of possibilities to share with our Budgies. Blessings, Jo Ann
