Default Will my little girl ever talk?!

Hi everyone,

This morning I put some pics of Horatio on here and found out he is in fact a she! She is about 9 weeks old now and we've been whistling and talking to her a lot. She is EXTREMELY vocal and energectic but I'm not sure if she will ever speak as I've read that it's quite unlikely? Is this true or a budgie myth?!! Do you have female budgies that like to talk?!!

There are female budgies that talk; there are male budgies that don't. It's very dependent on the individual bird, actually. She may start to talk or not, but if she does not, it won't be because she's a hen - it'll be simply because she doesn't happen to lean that way.

Yep, I agree. Many female budgies do, in fact, love to be as vocal or even more sometimes than the males. The myth originated because usually, females aren't as vocal.
However, that is in no way how every little budgie will act! If Horatio decides she likes to talk, then maybe she will. Or, she could end up liking to mimic noises instead, like my girl Mallorn.
It depends! It's entirely possible your gorgeous little girl will learn to talk

As AlterEgon and StarlingWings have said, not all budgies talk, whether male or female. Females are more likely to mimic noises, and males are more likely to talk, but every budgie is its own ball of tricks!

We taught Sammy to talk before he learned to whistle, and now he can't whistle correctly (we whistle at him and he responds by "singing" what we do). It's adorable. I've read that if you're trying to teach a bird to speak, teaching them to whistle may be more fun and they may lose interest in speaking and keep whistling.

We'd love to see a video of your budgie!
