Default Does buzz need a friend?

I have 3 budgies, did have four but Casper my white boy died about 2 months ago. He and Buzz were very bonded and inseparable.

I now have three boys - below are their temperaments in a nutshell:

BUZZ: Anxious, needs other budgies - had him as a single budgie but worked out after a week or so he was one of 'those' budgies who was not going to thrive on his own. He loves to play and be silly. CANNOT STAND RIO!!! Will not let him near him even though Rio adores him.

RIO: Ratbag budgie - full of confidence - total opposite to Buzz. Always ready to play and ANNOY the other two until they give him short shift. He will be back in their face in a minute or two as he can't help himself. Having said that he does have long periods of time where he is happy to talk to sit by himself. He is very independent but a stirrer. HAS BONDED WITH MOE OF LATE.

MOE: My sweet sweet boy, Moe. He is the friend of all friends, kind to everyone, friends with everyone. He plays with Buzz and Moe. Buzz and he were very bonded before Casper came along and bonded to Buzz. He and Buzz have never again had the bond they used to have, even with Casper gone. Moe and Rio have bonded more of late and play and act silly together a lot. This leaves Buzz out of the loop a fair bit as he will not join in if Rio is involved. He and Moe do have lots of times beaking together and playing together though.

So what are your thoughts on getting a friend for Buzz? I have no clue if Buzz will LIKE it even if I do get one or if getting another will upset the dynamics in the cage. I worry Rio will be very annoying to a new budgie as he thinks he owns the cage, not in a mean way but just an annoying way.

Thoughts??? I just worry for my Buzzy boy. He is happy enough but not ecstatic like was when he had his buddy Casper. I feel for the little fellow, especially as he is the most nervous and needy of my boys.

Hi, Madonna!

If it were me, I would definitely get a little buddy for Buzz.

After quarantine, I'd house Buzz and the new little male in a cage together (away from Moe and Rio) for a few weeks to give the two time to bond with one another.

Once the two are well-bonded, then I'd introduce the two back to Moe and Rio in neutral territory so the four can get to know one another.

I believe that gives you the best chance of Buzz having a friend of his very own and, in my opinion, four budgies always seems to work better than three.

A leftover budgie in a group is always a bit sad, I think. I'd get him a new buddie, but try not to expect the same degree of closeless right away.

Your Rio sounds 100 % like by Sir Harry, by the way (who looks horribly tattered on a permanent basis because he won't stop until thoroughly beaten up, after which he goes to sleep in a corner, only to wake up and resume his antics...)

Thanks Deb. That's a good way to do it actually, very clever! My goodness, I will have a house over-run by birds!!!!

Thanks for that. Ha ha, imagine Sir Harry and Rio together! They would probably love each other actually. Hyper hyper budgies!!!! Gotta love 'em, unless you happen to be in a cage with them

I joke that Sir Harry only has two operating modes: "On" and "Off". Sir Harry and Rio in one flock - that sounds a bit frightening! (also, despite the name, Sir Harry is a hen... I'm a bit afraid to imagine what kind of offspring they might produce!).
