Default Diving out of cage...

I have noticed that Basil likes to dive out of his cage.. I have been keeping the door open so he gets used to not being "caged" up all the time when I'm in the room, but he likes to dive out of it. Fortunately, his wings are clipped, so he's not going far. I do have an ottoman in front of his cage, so he flaps down to that, and then to the floor without hurting himself.

I did just get home from being out, I opened his cage and sat down and then I hear him chirp once and then dive out of his cage...

Has anyone else experienced this kind of behavior? I have had him for 13 days now and he really likes chirping along to certain songs (Pentatonic 'Daft Punk' and Enrique Iglesias 'I Like It') and he lets me stick my hand in the cage and caress his chest sometimes, but this behavior I am just not used to. I attached a rope perch on the outside so he can be outside his cage and be comfortable.

Yes, my budgies like to "dive" out of their cage too.
Now that they all have full flight feathers it's more like they are launching themselves into their full-speed fly about the room though.

I have a couple of 'divers', too.. Plus they 'buzz' me all the time. I wish they'd stop on my head/shoulder for a visit, but they'd rather just buzz on by... quickly. Silly little guys.

I love the picture of him sitting on his rope outside the cage and the fact that you put an ottoman there to cushion his landings is awesome, Jackie. Basil is a handsome fellow!

Gorgeous little budgie! I did the same thing as you with rope perches on the outside. Yes mine dives out of the cage all the time, but instead of descending to the floor he zooms up and down the room and buzzes my head.

There's a plant in the room with 2 stems about 6 inches apart and he loves flying between the stems for some reason and cackling like a madman... such funny little birds they are.

Are you going to keep Basil clipped or let his feathers grow in?

I was hoping to keep him clipped until I have him trained to step up when I reach into his cage. He is still very hesitant and resists me when I nudge my finger into his chest. He just scoots on down the perch. He does let me reach in and pet him though so that's a plus. I would love for him to have full feathers but I'm scared he's going to fly high and land somewhere where I can't reach him, aka the ceiling light we have hanging down in our front entrance way. We live in a split entry home so you just look over the ledge in the living room onto the entry way. I hope that makes sense...

Does he like spray millet? Maybe you could tempt him towards you with millet and hold a piece so he has to step onto your hand to reach it.
