Default Nick's depression

Hey guys and gals! Nick (my 4 year old male shown in my avatar pic) had a weird behaviour until 5 days ago. His mate escaped the cage a few months ago but he was behaving fine then. He sang all day, ate, played with his toys, etc. I have to say that Nick is the most distant bird of all 3. He didn't like taming process and I can't say that he enjoys human contact so much. But he is a very sweet bird!
So.. 2 months ago, all of a sudden he stopped singing and chirping inside the house. He even lost his apetite. He became skinnier and he would stay on the same spot on his perch for many hours. It was obvious that something was wrong. The only thing he liked is being outside, then he would chirp for a little. I am absolutely positive that he missed Eva, his last mate.
I decided to spend some more time with him. I talked more to him, I gave him treats, I played with him, sang to him, I even went to read some books next to his cage. I hope my other 2 birds excused me for this! During the first week, I saw no changes.
Then I continued doing that for another week and another week. 5 days ago, he began chirping! Then I saw he left that position on his perch and began to play with his toys!
Today, he "answered" to me when I was talking to him! then he sang so much! Do you think he was depressed? If so, what else can I do to comfort him? Any advice appreciated!

Sure sound's like he was very lonely without the attention he had been getting from Eva. I would also say it sound's like you are doing great bringing him out of that, keep up the good work...or ....you could get him a friend...

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that Nick has been feeling down lately. It's good that you were able to lift his spirits up by spending extra quality time with him.
Is Aries caged alone? If so and both of your boys get along well, maybe you would consider the possibility of them both sharing a cage.

Cousin Leonel (and I) are sending our best regards to Nick and hope he feels better and his happiness continues to increase with each passing day.

Thanks Randy! I was upset to see him like that, so I began the bonding process again, like it was in the beginning! It seems that sometimes we have to do it again! A new girl might be the solution? I don't know.

Big Nick, thank you for that song and advice! Love is the only thing that matters, right?

Thanks Ana and cousin Leonel! I haven't noticed this kind of behaviour before in any of my birds, it's strange! All my birds have separate cages. Aries has shown a great behaviour and I don't think that he'll have problems if I cage them together. I'll do my best to make his temper better each day for now

When a budgie loses a mate or close buddy it goes through a grieving/mourning process just like a person does. With the loss of Eva, Nick was definitely depressed and in need of additional attention. The quality time you have been spending with him recently has helped him immensely.

I agree with Ana that housing Nick with Aries would be a good option if the two get along.
In time, they may become quite good friends (as Sunny did with Sparky after losing Shelby) and both will be happier for having a buddy.

Good luck and please let us know how it goes.

Thank you Deb! I have to consider housing them together. I'll see how they get along next time they'll have out of cage time. To be honest, I am a bit anxious about it.. I was also adviced by our breeder to house the boys together and none of them with Lina. I guess we'll see..

I agree with your breeder that housing the boys together and not having either one of them with Lina would be best.

When you separate by gender you don't have to be concerned about unexpected breeding.

When Shelby died, Sunny was quite depressed as he and Sheby were very closely bonded. It took some time, but Sunny and Sparky are good friends now. They'll never have the same sort of bond Sunny and Shelby had but they are both happy and spend their days together which is good for both of them.

Yes, that would be the best.. Lina is old for this and breeding would put her health into problems. Especially now, that Aries's hormones are going like crazy! I loved hearing about Sunny and Sparky relationship. That would be my aim, creating a bond like theirs for my boys! Thank you!

that is great news that Nick is perking up! I definitely think he went through a mourning period. I think, unfortunately, we take our pet's relationships with us for granted. I know I have done this with Kissy, she seemed sort of similar, not wanting to come out of her cage much or really do a lot throughout the day. I started paying more attention to her and now she loves being out of the cage and sitting on my lap when I'm on the couch or on my shoulder Bonding is a great experience for both parties involved!

Hey Despina. I am sorry that Nick has been depressed. When any budgie loses his mate they are grieving for them and they go into there own little world same with a human when they lose a loved one. Maybe he is lonely and needs company I am so glad that you are spending time with Nick as he will bond with you that is why he answered you he is interacting with your voice. It is nice that you maybe putting Nick with Aries may they will bond with one another. I hope that Nick will be alright. As you know I only have one budgie and I wanted him to bond with me and teach him to talk. Maybe Nick will talk if you say an easy word to him over and over. Nick is a beautiful boy he is clever..
