Unhappy New Friend for Old Budgie?

I have a 16 year old budgie named August who just lost his latest mate, Hope. We went on vacation and the woman who was taking care of the birds opened the screen of the window in their room (!!!) and Hope managed to fly out the window. It has been two days and there has been no sighting of her, despite contacting the SPCA, local avian vets, public security, etc.

August seems very depressed and has barely been eating. He was very bonded with her. Since he is a very old bird Hope is his 4th friend, but he was definitely the closest with her (grooming her, etc).

I feel it would be best to get August a new friend, but I can't seem to find a budgie breederin the Montreal area. The ideal friend would be a old female who is extremely docile (August is the most submissive bird ever). Also, August lives free in a large room all the time so his friend can't have clipped wings.

Any suggestions on how to find another perfect mate for August? I thought when I got Hope August may be too old for a new lady friend but it turns out he has outlasted a friend, yet again. And what is the life expectancy of a budgie anyway? Is my old fellow breaking records yet?

Your input is much appreciated!:

August is indeed a very old fellow, and since he seems perfectly healthy, I can't believe it! I think he is breaking records, a budgie's "official" lifespan is usually 10-15 years at most

I'm so sorry about his and your loss of little Hope, the worst way to lose a budgie is through an open window, especially if you didn't even do it! Hopefully either someone nice will find her and return her safely to you but since there's been no sign I can only say that I'm sending over lots of hugs (and millet for August!) in this difficult time

About a new friend: I would first look at animal shelters, online classifieds, and things like that to see if someone has an already mature budgie that would be a good pair with him.
Obviously, a pet store budgie with clipped wings and a flighty attitude might just make him nervous, so this is the best choice. If you can't find any like this, I might consider leaving him without a friend and spending as much time as possible with him, to let him have time to heal his grief and bond with you. However, if this progresses and it's clear he's not going to be happy without a friend, I would look for a good breeder as they can usually point you in the right direction of calm, docile mannered birds bred for temperament or might have a retired breeder they are willing to sell.
Best of luck with you and your old boy August!

Yes, Augie is very old! I think the fact that he lives free has helped. The funny thing is that I got him at 5 yrs old at the SPCA and, at the time, they said they weren't sure if he was adoptable because "he was too old". That was 11 years ago!

It's tricky to find him the right new friend because I have to be able to study a flock of birds together to make sure I find the most submissive one for him. The first buddy I got him was at the SPCA alone in a cage and seemed very passive, but when the same bird got home and got his confidence up he bossed August around.

At Augie's age now a friend has to be a good addition or it's not worth it. But in the past he got very depressed when he was alone, and he really perked up when he had a friend. Yes, he loves to hang with me, but I can't always be there with him. He and Hope had such fun together.

I keep hoping she'll come home again, but rationally I know she probably won't. I put her cage out tonight and I will pray she is in it tomorrow when I get up. That said, she's a timid little terrified bird who never bonded with me and I'm sure she's long gone. I adopted her when she was older, and she's so fearful she never came around to bonding with me.

I wish I could find the same breeder where I got her, but he doesn't seem to be listed anymore. Do you know of any breeders in Montreal, Quebec?

PS: In the meantime, I am, indeed, plying August with millet and Grape Nut cereal which he loves!

I don't know any breeders in Canada, unfortunately. We do have some Canadians here somewhere, though, hopefully they're come over and share where they got their little budgies! I bet it is hard for him to live by himself after having company for so long! I hope you both feel better soon and you find him a sweet little friend!

I'm so sorry to hear about Hope . Especially sad is that it wasn't your fault and could have been prevented.
I have heard enough times of people having budgies into their teens. The oldest I'd heard about was 18. This same owner seems to have any type of pet live past their life span.

I feel for you little old man. Poor guy says 'oh no, not again!' Budgies are so popular, that I think if you consistently comb classifieds, check regularly with ASPCA, you will find a special little one just meant to be for you and August. Best of luck. Please keep us posted!

I would get him a friend regardless of the age of the new one. Budgies really come alive when they are together and seeing that, I dont think I could ever have just one again. If you can handle and observe them, just look for one that isnt harassing others or complaining at another or biting their tail feathers etc. that is how I picked my Cozette and she is the sweetest thing. I have also noticed that baby budgie crave attention from other budgies so bad that they will readily take to any budgie to just not be alone. If you can get one that is that young (6-10 weeks ideally) they are incredibly easy to tame, heck they are practically tame already depending on the personality of the bird.

You could also check craigslist and things. I find that not to many people rehome budgies in comparison to large birds.

Very sorry to hear of your hen escaping. I do hope and pray that she is found. Do you have a budgierigar association or society in Canada that maybe has a list of breeder's ? I do think the old fellow is so used to having a feathered companion that he will have a hard time thriving without one. We have a member here who has a number of budgies in their late teen's and a couple in their early twenties, so your boy could be around for years yet. Please keep us posted on what you find...
