hi im a newbie

i have had my male and female budgies for a year due to my nan passing away

everything was going fine to say that they had to move house, but for a few weeks now they have been ripping up the paper on the bottom of their cage.

i read up on google and was informed that they were nesting but no egg has arrived.

sorry to sound stupid but i just don't want them to be unwell.

nb they are eating, drinking and chirping.

thanks for the help

ps can you please private message me as i'm not very good at using this forum yet lol

It does sound like they may be heading into breeding condition. My lot will regularly go through stages of tearing up paper etc. Nothing to worry about so long as you line the floor with newsprint or other non-toxic paper.

This behaviour should also not mean that you will see any eggs. So long as you don't have a nesting box or suitable alternative in the cage then it is unlikely the hen will decide to lay eggs. Here is a thread with a few other things you can do to reduce the chances of a egg being laid. When We Don't Want Eggs! - Talk Budgies Forums

I have PM'd this info to you as well. However, as there may be others with a similar questions we like to answer in forum as well.

Hi and to Talk Budgies!

The information in the link Li provided is excellent.
You definitely want to do everything possible to prevent your budgies from breeding/laying. Breeding is a big responsibility when done correctly and it's best to know as much about budgies and their care as possible. Only then should one begin their research to determine if breeding budgies is really something they want to consider.

To familiarize yourself with the forums, please take the time to read through all of the How To Guides, the FAQs and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.
You'll find most of your basic questions are answered after you've read through all of them.

I'm looking forward to hearing all about your budgies and hopefully seeing some pictures soon!!

Welcome to TB! It's great to see the concern you have for your little ones. Please do ask about anything you're unsure of after reading the great links Li and Deb have provided
I agree that you should never encourage egg laying, but showing natural nesting instincts, like paper shredding and urges to tear things up is fine.
My little one likes clean paper towels
Hope to see you and your little ones around here, and would love to see pictures when you get a chance

My little guys rip up the paper on the bottom of the cage too, sometimes.
