Default Mink steps up from her cage!

I meant to post this a couple days ago when I first noticed that Mink was finally getting onto my finger from inside her cage . I think she's also starting to associate the words "step up" to getting on the finger, as I transfer her from hand to hand. As of today anyway, she's not 100% confident yet. Before she steps up out of the cage she'll still run around, but not as frantically or as long as before before stepping up as I put my hand in there, but not chasing her. I know she'll come around soon.

It's so much easier starting with a handfed baby. Twigs (had him 2 1/2 years) makes it clear he doesn't like handling. He'll step up from the cage only to get out to fly and no other time. He's not afraid of me in the least, he's just always been more of a 'bird's bird' .

Congrats on getting so far with little baby Mink! She's a very good girl
I'm glad she's settled in--and maybe Twigs will even become a little tamer once she sets a good example!
Keep up the good work!

Thanks

So what is usually the tameness level expected with handfed budgies? This is assuming they're taken home soon enough that they don't revert to going completely wild again. Are they typically still skittish at first?

I wasn't sure what to expect, but was surprised she's getting comfortable so quickly. I can't even spend a lot of time with her right now since she's in quarantine, and I have other birds to spend time with too. Still, I'm pleased to see how well she's coming along.

Mink seems very mellow and willing to be friendly. She's never tried to bite, even with her apprehension. I wonder if that's already an indication of her adult personality? I know that with parrots, you can start to see marked individual personality traits many times even before they're weaned. I would guess it's the same with budgies. If that's true, she may just turn out to be a really nice girl, rather than the mean girls you so often hear about unless some hens change upon becoming mature? Then again I hear that some adult hens are just mellow like the guys . Then there are mean little boys like the guy in my avatar

Hand raised budgies are much easier and more easily bonded that is for sure. But as they all have their own personality and temperament as well it makes for a lovely relationship.
The differences between my three birds is amazing. Budget was hand raised and completely human orientated, he sleeps, eats talks and cuddles us all the time.
he has improved immensely since I goy the other budgies, because he didn't know he was a bird. It was so funny when he first met the others he immediately tried to jump on them as he does us
They tolerate him but do not treat him as one of them. the will always chase him away from the food but eat together without any problems, they will preen each other but not him, we actually preen him, we use our nose and rub him all over h loves it he makes little cooing sounds.

Thanks everyone

Cathy, it's interesting how the other budgies see Budget's behavior from imprinting on humans, and think he's a little 'strange', and don't want him in their little clique lol how sad!

Well, now Mink is stepping right up without even running around first . I have a feeling how fun this is going to be with a tame budgie!
