Default How to introduce a second budgie to one that's not tame?

Update: Today I bought Joe a huge 3 bird cage, he is now in it and happy. I also kept his old small cage. Tomorrow I'm getting my new budgie and he will go in the small cage for a while. I've been looking at websites on how to introduce a second budgie. But they all include letting them out. Thing is Joe hates being let out. He will come on my finger but that's it. So does anyone have a guide on how to introduce a second budgie without letting them out?

I've had a number of budgies, and I've personally never had a problem introducing my budgies. So anyways, quarantine the new guy for at least four weeks in a separate room from Joe, and wash your hands in between cages. After the four weeks are up, and you are positive the new budgie is healthy, move the newbie's cage into the same room as Joe's, and put the cages side by side. After a week or so, you can put the new guy in with Joe. I guess ideally you'd let them socialize outside of their cages together before putting them in the same cage, but I've never actually done that when introducing my budgies to each other, and it turned out fine.

So anyways, watch how they interact together in the same cage for 30 minutes to an hour. If they squabble a bit, that's fine. If you've never kept two or more budgies in the same cage before, you might mistake harmless bickering and dominance displays, with actual fighting. Harmless fighting consists of threatening with open beaks and a bit of gentle pecking. If one of them is ticked off, s/he might poke the other a few times to annoy him/her.

It's normal for them to be shy with each other for the first day or so of being in the same cage, along with them perhaps picking on each other a little to test their boundaries and establish dominance.

Oh, another way to help break the ice is by putting two spray millets in.

In general they will rush together as soon as you let them or they warm up to one another but usually as soon as you open one cage he will fly to the other

I agree with Robyn - following the 4-6 week quarantine period, place the two cages side-by-side for a few days.

Then, when you are ready to introduce the new budgie into the cage with Joe, I'd suggest you rearrange all the perches, and toys in the cage. This will help lessen any inclination Joe may have to be territorial about his home and possessions. You will want to put in two food dishes and two water dishes for awhile until Joe and the new budgie get used to one another's company.

I agree. Multiple food and water dishes are a must when they're getting used to each other. Despite the fact that I had three food dishes in with Ziggy and Alice, Ziggy kept harassing Alice whenever she tried to eat. He's obsessed with food, so that probably had something to do with it .

When I put Ziggy and Alice together, they bonded instantly. It was the cutest thing I've ever seen. However, when I put all of my budgies together in the new double-flight cage I to them, Ziggy went over to say hi to Samantha. And by "hi", I mean he tried poking her in the head a few time to be affectionate. She ended up pecking him a few times, which made him upset. As a result, Ziggy kept harassing Samantha, Charlie, and Ju, and kept trying to beat them up. He's best friends with them all now.

Typically, though, budgies will be drawn to each other like magnets.
