I got a young Budgie about a month ago. I am dying to bond with him but made a few mistakes in the process. I don't know what to do. He was okay with me until I grabbed him to take shower under the tap. He is acting skittish, would run away from me... I know he is terrified and I have no ideas how to help him!
To bond with a budgie you first must gain his trust.
To build your budgieís trust, sit by his cage and read, talk or sing quietly to him for a period of at least 10-15 minutes, 3 or 4 times day. After the 2nd or 3rd day, rest your hand on the outside of the cage when you talk to him so he'll learn that your hand is safe and will not hurt him.
After a week, rest your hand inside the cage when you talk.
Donít make sudden moves, donít try to touch him.
Let him get used to the idea that the hand is now in his safe place and not harming him.
After 2 weeks, begin moving your hand slowly toward the budgie and begin your taming and bonding sessions.
Talk to your budgie calmly and reassuringly whenever you interact with him. Don't make sudden movements as that will startle him.
Take a look at the stickies in the Training and Bonding Section of the forum for additional tips.
In the future, please do not try to force your budgie bathe or take a shower. You can offer him a shallow dish with a little water, hang wet greens in his cage and/or see if he enjoys being very lightly misted with room temperature water.
