We're having problems with our two male budgies, Pepe and Paco. The problem is that Pepe is absolutely rampant and spends his entire waking life trying to mount Paco. As you can imagine, Paco isn't too happy about this, but until yesterday has just kept moving out of the way.
Yesterday though, Paco had finally had enough. They were out of the cage when the fight started, and when we came back into the room to see what the commotion was they were locked in combat and rolling around the floor. Feathers and blood everywhere, we separated them and shut Paco in the cage while leaving Pepe out. The fracas didn't dampen Pepe's ardour though and he spent the rest of the day feeding Paco through the bars of the cage.
We separated them today, and Pepe hasn't stopped trying to get out of his cage and over to Paco for a second!
Can anything be done to stop Pepe? It's come to a point where if we can't calm him down then we are going to have to get rid of him, and we don't really want to do that.
Any and all suggestions appreciated.
How old are your budgies and are you positive Paco is a male?
For now, I believe the best thing for you to do is keep them in separate cages and put the cages in separate rooms.
To help with Pepe's continual urge to "mate", make sure he has access to lots of flight/climbing exercise and limit high protein foods. Ensure he has two or three swings to encourage him to keep moving and tire himself out. Chew toys like Kabobs and other shredding toys are helpful and you’ll want to be sure to provide plenty of wood to chew--especially when he is in condition.
