I have mentioned in a few posts about my bird Benedict, the survivor of a happy flock of three after losing his two best friends Lucy and Michael this year. It is almost 2 weeks now after losing Lucy, and after a shakey week Benedict has completely come out of himself and is now I think ready for company again. Funny how bereavement makes them bond even closer to us.
The good news is that I have renewed contact with my local breeder Mark (English budgies only) and he is putting aside a selection of budgies to replenish the flock. The plan is 2 baby hens and 1 baby cock, and on his advice after taming and quarantine they should all be introduced in one go. As he said, it is far better to get the pecking order established as a one time event. Going to make taming interesting, I have tamed 2 at a time before but never 3!
I am so excited for Benedict - he has only known regular bird company up to 2 weeks ago so this has been a very tough time for him. He is such a friendly, unassuming but lively budgie I just can't wait for his world to be expanded again.
And of course I am very excited too - I am really looking forward to having a full house again! Just a few days to go.....!
If anyone has any tips on taming 3 birds at once I would love to hear them thank you!
That is definitely exciting news!
Benedict will be getting three new friends at one time - wow.
I'm glad to hear he's starting to feel better again and the bond between the two of you is getting stronger.
Working with each of the babies individually during their quarantine period should help the taming and bonding process move along more quickly. You can take whichever budgie you are working with into a separate room for a 15 or 20 minute session and then move on to the next. You are going to be one busy fellow!
I'm looking forward to seeing pictures and hearing all about your new arrivals once you have them home and all settled.
Thanks Randy and Deb, and thanks for the tips. Luckily I have 2 additional cages and a transport cage, so managing the taming will hopefully be a little more straightforward from that aspect. I can see I will be taking a fair amount of time off work in the next few weeks!
That's amazing! I bet you're so excited, and Benedict will be happy to have some new flockmates soon, I'm sure
I know quarantine will seem like an eternity, but all the new flock members will enjoy the anticipation too, I bet!
Congrats on your soon-to-be new additions, I can't wait to see pictures!
and Princess Mallorn!
Thank you to Deb for her wonderful Faery magic
