Default How to define "tame"...

Princess Jakob is 8.5 months old now, if she was indeed 3 months when I got her. I spend a lot of time with her and feel I've accomplished a lot in the 5.5 months she's lived her.

She came from a petshop and was tiny when I got her. My previous budgie had just passed away from illness.

Jakob was instantly comfortable with my hands in the cage. It was needed when cleaning the cage. She would remain very calm and even move closer to observe! I know now from reading all the advice here that I should have left her alone for a couple of weeks, but after 3 days she stepped up on my finger and continued to do that over and over again. A few days later I let her out for the first time, as I know I'd get her to step up so I could get her back in the cage.

She started having some out of cage time daily. For the first few months she'd sait for me to pick her up to bring her in and out of the cage. I could leave the cage door open, but unless invited to leave she'd not do so. I used to put her in the cage for feeding time, but as she needed to eat more, I added food trays in her playground. That's where she now spends her time whenever I'm home. Well, that and flying around.

I've had a friend mind her a few times when I've been away for a few days. She's not at home in that house, and a few times she's flown back in the cage by herself. I've never seen her do that...

On one of those occasions I stayed a few hours for her to settle. She couldn't quite find her way around, and after a while she landed on my shoulder. That was the first time she'd ever done that. Again, I read about how your birds do that all the time, and I wish I could get herself to fly to me.

So, here's the thing. Jakob recently started changing her route when flying to include directly flying over me. She'll come close, but not land. This morning I was sitting on the sofa and got surprised when she flew over to me. I moved - unfortunately. If not, I really think she might have landed.

I've started getting her to sit more on my shoulder, as I imagine that's where she'll want to land. What can I do to encourage this?

She'll step up instantly when I go to her. She'll climb on my arm. She'll "kiss" me all the time, and she's not one bit afraid. She loves to be petted. She'll sit and wait for me whenever she drops a feather so she can put it in my hand. I consider her very tame, but is she a little bit afraid of me and doesn't want to land on my shoulder?

Sorry for the long ramble, but I'd really like some suggestions on what to do as the next step in the training process. Thanks in advance

How exciting and truly amazing in the short time you have been interacting with Jakob. Things are progressing very well for you both. I know you feel like she is stalling but she is actually getting a little closer and gaining her confidence each time she flies over you. Have patience sit calmly and speak to her as you always do when she is flying around, I actually tap my shoulder as a signal for my budgie to come he knows this now and responds every time.
You could also try standing and hold your hand up and out, they like to go to the highest point usually. am sure it is just a matter of time for you to be having cuddles.

Thanks for your reassuring comments, Cathy. I hope she is thinking about flying over to me and that it's not just by accident that she's coming closer. She'll happily sit and cuddle, but I have to go pick her up.
