Question Stroke that belly!

Hi all

My budgies are so confusing when it comes to human contact.
I went out last night and when I came back the budgies were climbing the cage, I went to stroke Giggles and he didn't run/fly away like he normally does, he happily let me stroke his belly.
But then the next day, I went to stroke both of them when they were on top of the age and they ran and flew away.
So confused as I know they trust me as they don't run away when I walk up to them when they are on top of the cage etc, and when I put my hand in the cage they just happily watch me change their food.

Please help!!

Aww, it's good to hear your little ones trust you to stroke them and be with them! Don't worry, budgies tend to be very picky about when they are touched. It doesn't mean they trust you less, they just aren't "in the mood".
Don't worry--some days they'll just appreciate belly rubs a little more

I agree with Starling...it is just a matter of timing and bird attitude at the time...

Before I got these little darlings, I didn't know there was such a thing as 'bird attitude'. I've learned those 2 little words have a whole lot of meaning and cover acres of ground, so to speak.
It is confusing, but .. patience and allowing for bird attitude helps, I think

My bird will only let me touch him with my nose...he climbs on my glasses and even on my spoon when I am eating cereal (he likes to take a nibble!) but he is still fearful if I try to stroke his body. So I don't push it!

As it was night time when this occurred I feel this is the reason they allowed you to touch the belly.Generally speaking budgies are far more quieter and easier to catch and touch at night or dark. Budgies do not have good night vision at all this is why they tend to sleep when the sun goes down. Patience and lots of interaction will see you gaining their trust and you never know one day ........

Congratulations, that's great news!! You've gotten farther in the "touching" area than most of us, you seem to have particularly cuddly budgies

I also think it has a lot to do with budgie personality, as others have said above. Some birds are just more cuddly than others. My Sammy has never liked to be touched on his head, wings, belly, etc., yet he still likes to sit on my shoulder and will step up on command.

I think it's great that they are accepting you as part of the flock, since they like for you to be around them. Good job!
