Default Chucking food and nipping at tails...

Hi, I'm checking back in after some time. About two months ago I took in a found Kakariki. I already had Pacha, my budgie, back then. They've grown fond-ish of each other during that time, most of the day is spent with both of them in Houdini's cage.

I've begun to notice however Pacha does enjoy to nip at Houdini's tail in passing. I'm not sure what her intentions are, it doesn't seem really harmful but... eh, I don't know. Houdini doesn't go real near her (as in: cuddle up), but I'm aware that's not the Kakariki nature.

I've googled and found a lot about birds nipping at their own feathers, but not when it's done to other birds?

Also, Pacha's begun to throw the food out of her own bowl and now hangs around Houdini's cage eating HIS food. Should I be stopping them from spending time in the same cage, does this mess up social structures or...? I'm clueless.

(here's a vid to Pacha playing hopscotch on my knees, just to show how she's grown: https://youtu.be/k--bZz3dsHU)

Hi Kim,

I'm glad to hear Houdini has settled in so well and that he and Pacha are getting along
So long as there's no aggression I think it should be okay but I would keep the supervised when out together regardless. Regarding Pacha throwing food, he could be mimicking Houdinis foraging skills? I'm not sure!

Thanks for the update I've been wondering how Houdini was getting on

Hi Niamhf! Thanks for checking in Pacha has learned a LOT of new skills from Houdini, including flying and climbing (she used to not fly around as much as she does now). Perhaps you're right about the whole foraging thing. Maybe it's time for me to start putting her food bowl on the tray of the cage... hmm. Food for thought.

And no, I notice no aggression in their behavior, though Pacha can come on a little strong sometimes. She really likes to slowly follow Houdini around the cage, but Houdini is like a rocket in comparison of speed to her so... eh, she tries.

Just wondering WHY she does it though... maybe I'm misunderstanding. I would hate for something as minor as that to be harmful in the end.

Thanks for dropping a reply! How're your birdies doing?

Haha I think she thinks she's a kakariki and just idolises Houdini 😊

Oisin (my budgie) copied everything that Noah (my kakariki) did - he even learned to speak kakariki! I often got them mixed up

Sadly Oisin passed away in April after losing a very brave battle to polyomavirus. We were all heartbroken (still are) and even little Noah sat perfectly still for the entire day (which as you know doesn't happen much with kakarikis) as he was grieving.

He's doing well now though and is getting spoiled rotten - he's even got a professional photo shoot coming up

Oh no... that's so sad to hear My condolences! And yeah, for Noah to sit still all day long-- that would definitely translate to kakariki for grieving. Poor thing.

Moments after your reply by the way, Pacha literally took half a grape in her mouth and carried it around: much like Houdini does. Ehhh, seems like we have a severe case of the mix-ups here indeed. But then again, what's not to idolise about such a big, beautiful kakariki? Maybe I should hang tiny posters of Houdini in her cage.. huh.

Thanks Kim, yes it was a very sad day for us but he's not suffering anymore and that in itself is a relief.

Lol I think the poster idea is great!. So funny that she took the grape! For such a small bird too. She definitely has some Dutch courage going on!!!
