Default Bird sitter or not...

I had to go away overnight rather urgently yesterday. It was only one night, so I opted to leave the office early and work from home in the afternoon, until I had to leave for the airport around 3pm. Jakob had out of cage time and I made sure she had enough food and drink - and her new food bowls heavy enough that they don't fall off the wall if she lands on them.

Anyway, I felt awfully guilty leaving her. It was 9pm tonight was I got home, and she couldn't wait to get out of the cage.

I did consider leaving her with a friend, but she isn't a fan of the drive because the area where I live is full of speed bumps and pot holes. I figured it would stress her more to be moved than to be on her own.

What to the rest of you do in situations like that? What's the longest you'll leave your bird(s) alone?

Well, although I wouldn't do it again, I once left Mallorn alone, in her cage, at home, for a week. A whole week!

I did Skype her every day, she had three food dishes filled to the brim and two water bottles and a water dish and two new toys.

This unfortunate situation arose from us not being able to find a bird sitter anywhere, and the people who took care of Mallorn during our last vacation happened to be away during our vacation!

Although she was fine, she was very cross when we got back, but she got over it
The most I would leave her is probably three or four days. I agree that in most cases of short leave (1-3 days) it's better to leave them at home, since traveling and the new environment would probably be very stressful.

You just made me feel much less like a horribly budgie "mum". Thank you!

Hi Dorte.. As you may have read in another post, I'm looking at leaving my birds for 3 nights next month... and the resounding advice was to leave them in their cages with my sister (who is afraid of them) feeding them, etc. Oh, it's so hard, isn't it?
Sounds like little Jakob did ok.. and the biggest factor was that she was safe. . If mine were to be alone for 3 nights, without anyone here or checking on them, I'm not sure what I'd do for sure. I can't imagine taking mine to someone else's home or to the vet for boarding.. Would you take Jakob to your friend if you were gone longer?

Hi Judy, I sure did read about your concerns about leaving your sister to mind them but possibly having to leave them in the cage. I've left Jakob with a friend a few times when I've been away longer. She doesn't love it, but hey. I'd rather leave her with a friend than with a vet, even though my vet does offer that service. She likes out-of-cage time, and I'm not sure the vet would really give her that. I'll actually be going away for between 7 and 10 days from Sunday, so I'll have to find someone to mind Jakob. It might not be someone who's minded her before, so that possibly means she won't get much (if any) out of cage time. She has a good sized cage and loads of toys, so I know she'll be fine, and I'll be able to skype her I hope you figure out what's best for you when you head away soon.

It indeed is a problem, but I also think we are making it a problem by overanalysing the situation as we do . I know I have done it as well.
I am extremely lucky in the fact my son lives not far away and visits regularly, the budgies all know him and interact with him. SO I bribe him to shift into our house whilst we are away, I always have enough seed, calcium bells, fresh foods, and written explicit instructions. he often laughs at me but it works for us. It is now pay back time my son is away and we have his dog living here with us for two months.
