Default Budgies mating?

Hello! As the title suggests, I've recently noticed my two budgies (male and female) mating. I've come across it twice now, once two days ago, and once today. They are both aprox. 6 months old, and I cover them up every night. Sarah(the female) does not have the brown cere that I often see online indicating a female in breeding condition. I do not have a nest box in their cage.

I don't think I am ready to start a budgie family... Is there anything I can do to prevent this behaviour? And is there a way to tell if a budgie is going to lay eggs?

Any suggestions or related stories would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance!

Hi there
If there's no nest she probably wont be laying any eggs..
You must look out for the following signs
Is the female trying to nest on the bottom of the cage.. if she's pregnant
her droppings will enlarge and you can she if she has an egg bum also a lot of tail bobbing when perched.
Not all females ceres turn brown when they want to breed but 6 months is a little bit to young for the bird as well. If she lays eggs on the bottom you can just take them and throw them out..
Try to hide or get rid of any ideal nesting spot in the cage.. if the mating behavior don't stop after she laid and you tossed the eggs you would have to split up the pair
Hope this help
Just to prevent any eggbound troubles give some greens and a cuttle bone for calsium

Hi and to Talk Budgies!

I'm glad you are planning to discourage breeding at this time.
Budgies should not be bred until they reach 12-18 months of age and then only after extensive research.

You can make sure you hve nothing in the cage that could be used as a nesting site, limit daylight hours and foods used to bring budgies into breeding condition. Please take a look at this thread:

Hi there and to the forums!

It's great to have you with us and it sounds like you have a very well bonded pair. Giovanni and Deb have given excellent advice, that is the best way to discourage laying.

I hope to see some pictures of your little ones soon, and feel free to ask about anything else you're wondering about
