Hey all! I am pleased to announce that I have finally (after a long case) taken home an abused budgie from a person in my neighbourhood. This little fella has an extremely bad case of scaly face and leg disease, and is missing both an eye and a leg due to being attacked. The previous owners gave no medical treatment to this baby boy, and I have taken him under my care. He has been isolated from both Percy and Tweety and is simply the sweetest bird, however he requires very special attention. His perches are low to the ground as he cannot fly properly and due to his missing leg, has difficulty clinging to perches and mainly spends his time on the ground. After a checkup at the vet he has recieved medication and a special cage layout plan so that he has easy access to food and water.
For now he has no name, so I would appreciate some suggestions below. I would prefer not to share any images so far as his conditions ghastly and I am sure most people won't be interested, but of course I can post some if you wish. He is a simply gorgeous olive green with a yellow face (Unsure of his mutation).
Once again, name suggestions would be very welcome, have a nice day!
Awesome to hear that there are people like you who not only refuse to stay indifferent but will take action to get helpless creatures out of hopeless situations. All my best wishes and thoughts to you and your rescue.
I hope you can get him in shape and happy soon. He's a lucky bird after all
Hello Siena, nice to meet you! I think it is wonderful that you have rescued this little bird.
I have recently taken on 2 disabled babies from a local breeder, so can empathise with your learning curve, or at least your situation. Mine are victims of French moult and will never fly or balance particularly well without tail feathers - making arrangements for them to get around very challenging but doable! They are currently quarantined with a healthy baby who flies now, so satisfying all of them adds yet another element - I am awaiting arrival of a much larger cage and some specially selected furniture which should make it easier.
But as you say, they are just as adorable aren't they?
As for a name, I bet most people will have the following idea for you to consider.... Long John! One leg, one eye and a real character! Obviously, the pirate Long John Silver from "Treasure Island". Ha ha! I got in with it first!
More than happy for you to PM me if you ever feel the need to swap notes on caring for a disabled bird. It sounds like you are very experienced anyway, but I am sure you are going to get loads of advice from the very knowledgable people here! Good luck!
Hello and a huge welcome, I have given you Karma for being so caring and loving.
With loce and encouragement this sweet budgie has just as much right to a full and happy life be it for however long. The mites are treatable, he will amaze you with how he will adapt I am sure. thankyou also (Got my Moderator hat on now) for being so thoughtful and understanding regarding some of our younger and more sensitive members.
As far as a name I will have to think on that one. Please keep us in the loop regarding your sweet baby come back again soon
I am glad you managed to rescue this budgie who clearly needed the saving, given the extremely bad conditions he has been in. I'm wishing all the best to the little fellow, I hope he will soon be rid of the nasty mites and live a happy life while under your care.
Believe me he will forever be grateful for this fresh start at life you are giving him and bond you have with him will get so much stronger.
RIP sweet Tito (Summer 2008 - January 17th 2013).
You are missed and never will be forgotten.
Thank you all so much! That was awfully kind of you to give me karma, I am in your debt
Bird seems to be settling down well and I am so glad for all your support, you are all extremely sweet! I am just disgusted at how people don't bother to look after their birds, they are just as relevant as dogs or cats. Its saddening and I want to do my best to help. My mother is not pleased with having another bird in the house, however he is awfully quiet and clean, which is a upside. Hopefully dear mother and Bird can get along well, haha!
Well done you for refusing to turn a blind eye and rescuing this little baby - I'm sure he'll having a much more loving home with you. Just when you said you also have a bird called Percy, I had two budgies at the same time one called Percy and the other called Bert, just a wee idea for you :-)
Amanda and Pearl
Mickey, Bob, Bert, Percy, Princess and Poppy - always in my heart
Fair play to you for welcoming this little bird into your home. I'm sure he'll have a happy life in your care, despite the missing eye and leg. Can't wait to see him when he gets a bit better Maybe the name "Asha" would be one to consider. It means "wish" or "hope"...
Thank you so much for taking this poor little budgie in. I am glad he has found a good caring home with you. People who ill treat any kind of animal or bird are beyond my comprehension.I hate them. But what goes around comes around. They will pay for it one day. I think the name Lucky would be a good name. Because he has been rescued from such people and lucky to have found you.I am sure he will love you with all his little budgie heart.
Bless you for rescuing this wee mite..."there is a dark place in hell for folk whom abuse animals"
A name I like for the little guy, is 'Merri' - it is Aboriginal, (Wurungjeri), meaning 'rocky', seeing he had a rocky start in life...but, now has a wonderful, loving and caring forever home with you...
